Klipsch Surround Sound HD Theater Advice

Hello All,

I am new to the forum and welcome some experienced advice. I had an old Denon receiver that no longer works and am looking to replace it with a Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K since it has the iPod built in and seemed like great value for the price.

I am not planning on using the front speakers from Klipsch due to some Altec Lansing tower speakers I already own.

My house came pre-wired where you can hang 4 ceiling speakers. I saw the Klipsch HD Theater 300 and thought that would be a good entry level package since it's quite an upgrade from what I don't have now and is priced at about $400-$500, but was looking for some advice.

Thanks in advance and look forward to the advice.

Do I understand you want to buy a package setup, then NOT use most of the speakers?  If so, wouldn't you be better off to just buy what you need?

John,

Thanks for the question.

I have the 4 pre-wired ceiling and thought the HD Theater package would be good value for my needs and the room would look good with all 4 speakers wired into the ceiling. My issue is I want to continue to use my Altec Lansing Towers as my front speakers.

I am open for suggestions for rear speakers, center, and subwoofer that I could put together on my own too. Thank you again for the response.

Hi Jason,

I understand that your house is pre-wired for ceiling speakers, but the ceiling is one of the worst places to put speakers.  Side walls or stands for your surrounds, and rear wall or stands for your rears is much better. Of course if you have to compromise, ceiling speakers are better than no speakers.

If you plan to use your existing speakers for the front, you should get the matching center.  Mixing speakers from different lines does not work (look up "Timbre Match").  If you are looking at a package setup, I suggest you use all the speakers.

Lastly, get the sub from an internet direct company like SVS, HSU, etc.  Once you get a good sub, keeping the towers may a high priority....

Hi David,

I own a pair of Altec Lansing 100 (according to the sticker on the back) bought back in 1996. Any ideas on a compatible center channel I could buy aftermarket? Would it matter if I had, say, Bose rear speakers and subwoofer, if my front and center channel are matched? Thank you for your insight.

Jason,

Maybe contact the company to see what they recommend for the center.  There are a few AL fans around here.  If you can wait, I'm sure someone will be able to help.

The surrounds are not as important for timbre matching, so the BOSE would work (if you already own them - don't buy them if you don't).  BOSE does not make a real subwoofer (they call it a bass module - it is used to try to fill the gaps with those tiny speakers), so I would suggest replacing it as well.

David,

I had an idea. I was thinking I could buy the surround package for movies and tv, but use the Pioneer's Receiver's capabilities to use just the AL's for music (as if I was powering outdoor speakers) under the B speaker setting. Do you think that would work?

In the meantime, I will wait to see if any of the AL guys can help me out.

Jason
