Help with connections and receiver for HD Theater

 Hi all,

I have a 55 inch HD Sony, a PS3, and an old receiver (Sony DAV-DX150). I learned through another forum that the receiver will not allow me to play Blue Rays through the surround sound like my old DVDs. So a few questions:

Which receiver should I look into buying, relatively affordable? It needs to play the PS3 games and DVDs through my speakers, as well as allow me to watch regular Directv and listen through the speakers.

Can I keep my old speakers and just buy the receiver?

If I don't upgrade the receiver, how can I just connect the TV to the old Sony receiver so that I can watch TV in surround sound?

This should probably be moved to the "basics" area ... this section is more for custom theater installation issues.

The old receiver has a video/sat "audio in" red/white analog input.  You can connect the TV's "audio out" to this to get Prologic surround (quite a bit worse than discrete digital 5.1, but probably better than just TV speakers) from either the TV or the connected PS3.

To get the best discrete digital sound from both DirecTV + PS3, you'll have to start over.  The speakers aren't really worth keeping, and the sub is unpowered which is problematic.  What's your total upgrade budget for this?  Receiver + speaker systems can last a long time, 10+ years, so it's worth spending a bit to get something you don't feel like you have to upgrade.  It'll potentially be much better sound than you are getting through those tiny Sony speakers.

A few hundred dollars I guess. Would something like an Onkyo receiver do the trick? Which model or later should I look for? What type of speakers?
