"The Walking Dead" - Frank Darabont, AMC

Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead" is not only one of the best-selling independent titles in comics, but it's on the cusp of being a TV series on AMC.  Darabont is set "to write and direct a series adaptation" according to Variety.  Kirkman descibes his book as a "Romero zombie film that never ends."  More accurately, the zombie world-clearing event is mainly an excuse to examine how people survive.  The title actually has a double meaning.  Does it refer to the zombies or the living?

Damn you! I wanted to make The Walking Dead thread.

This is exciting news. The Walking Dead is the best zombie story I've ever encountered and with the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Romero's films (Diary aside, that movie sucked) that's saying a lot. Hopefully it lives up to the comics greatness.

No way.  I have the entire series in single issue form.  I had to be the one.    I'd never sell it, but if this show comes to pass, it looks like the value will be going up.

It looks like BSG's Jamie Bamber may be leading the cast.

This is getting at least a six episode run, starting in October.

Some bloke called Andrew Lincoln is getting the lead role.  Rick Grimes.  I know the HTF is just burning with excitement over this show, so I brought the news as fast as I could.

Thanks Greg - I am eagerly waiting for this show to air - I appreciate your updates (and enthusiasm)

I try not to read this thread that much for fear of spoilers (I've only read the first trade).

Thanks, guys.  Travis, typical TV spoiler warnings apply as if the book doesn't even exist.  Any plot points should only be discussed in spoiler text, and I would suggest the added precaution of labeling spoilers as pertaining to the book or the show.  As for me, I have no real interest in discussing the story here at all and will just try to bring production news when I find it and if it seems relevant.

Count me in as another fan of Kirkman's great "The Walking Dead" series that is eagerly awaiting this on AMC.  Given Frank Darabont's track record, I'm hoping for a faithful adaptation of the series.

Looks like Brandon Routh is in.  With Rick and Shane previously cast, I can't imagine his role.  Carl from the future?

I know this may sound odd because of the nature of the subject.  But, I do hope they do make some changes and make the show a bit less depressing.  I belong to a forum that is based on the zombie apocalypse.  And even most posters find the WD comics just too much of a downer.

Routh's people deny he's in it now.

Sarah Wayne Callies joined the cast as Lori Grimes.  I like her, so that's good news.  Say what you want about Prison Break, but they could raid that show for any number of actors as far as I'm concerned.  Fichtner, Knepper . . . those guys would be good at anything in the world.

First shots of the "roamers," if you want to see them:

"Roamers" is what the characters generally call the zombies.  AMC is calling them "walkers."

Looks good!

This should be fun to see.

I am looking forward to Bear McCreary's (Battlestar Galactica, Caprica) score for this show. The Walking Dead had a pretty good presence at Comic-Con this year. A replica of one of the sets was created for fans to have their photo's taken.

Dude, that's sick.  And not like the kids mean "sick."  Well, sort of, but also the traditional sick.

Why aren't all the sets in black and white?

I kind of think it would be cool if the show was in black and white. We know Darabont likes black and white and they could probably get away with more gore that way. I may just have to turn the colour down on my tv as an experiment once the show airs.

Whoo hoo!  My cable provider added AMC HD sometime in the last few days, so I'll be able to watch this in style.  The only thing left I'm stuck watching in SD is The Clone Wars.

New, long trailer for the show and the air date has been revealed too: http://livefeed.hollywoodreporter.com/2010/08/the-walking-dead-trailer-video.html#more-7052

I thought that the show would start on the first Sunday in October (rather than the last one) and had 5 of the 6 episodes run in October since that is traditionally the month that TV stations play horror movies.

I absolutely cannot wait for this.  One of the greatest comics of all time AND Bear McCreary scoring it all?!

Sold.

Agreed. 100 percent.

The end of October is fast approaching the continuum of sheer awesomeness for me -- The Walking Dead debuting on AMC, Apocalypse Now, The Exorcist, and the Alien films all coming out on Blu-Ray, plus Fallout: New Vegas and Fable III all dropping within a week of each other?

Nerdgasm-overload fast approaching.

(Also, very surprised no one's commented yet on Jericho's Lennie James getting cast as Morgan Jones on the show...)

He's been making the rounds lately: Human Target (where he was awesome), Lie to Me, and the re-make of The Prisoner, to name a few.  I'm glad he found a recurring role on a show that will (hopefully) last a bit.  I hear he's slated to appear in Human Target and Lie to Me, though, in a few guest spots.
