im kind of lost when it comes to the crossover frequency stuff. i also have a switch on the sub that says Phase 0 or 180 degrees. what does that mean, and whats the best for a dorm room to watch movies and play music. the speakers i have say they can run 8 ohms or less if that helps... thanks!

You're the guy with the old Technics stereo + Cerwin Vega sub using speaker level connection, right?
Phase basically means whether the driver is pushing out given a positive voltage bias at the terminals or pulling in. You want it "in phase" with your main speakers, pushing out at the same time. Flipped some of the sound will cancel out (depends also on room placement). Basically turn the crossover up on the sub all the way so there is some overlap. Pick the phase setting where the bass is stronger. Then look up the specifications on your speakers on the web. They'll say something like 65hz-20khz +/- 3dB. Use that lower frequency as a starting point for the crossover setting. You'll have to fiddle with it up/down along with the volume to pick what you feel is the best blend. Too high, the bass will overlap too much with those of the speakers, making the bass too strong around that frequency. Too low, you get the opposite effect.
