This Country’s #1 Movie of All Time1
Arrives in Spectacular New Blu-ray Version!

GONE WITH THE WIND

70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition

from Warner Home Video November 17

With More than Eight Hours of Enhanced Content, Two of Which Are Brand New

Includes New Documentaries and Nostalgic Collectibles in Limited, Numbered Velvet Keepsake Box, Perfect for Gift Giving

Burbank, Calif. August 10, 2009 – Winner of 10 Academy Awards® including Best Picture, and still history’s all time domestic box-office champion[1] ($1.5 billion1), Gone with the Wind has long been considered the most celebrated motion picture of all time.  On November 17, Warner Home Video (WHV) will honor the romantic epic with a stunningly restored and remastered version, available for the first time on Blu-ray™.  Gone with the Wind 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collectors Edition is sure to be a “must-have” for collectors of classic films, available both in Blu-ray as well as on DVD.

The highlight of this new Blu-ray version of Gone with the Wind is how it looks and sounds. As they’ve done with The Wizard of Oz, Warner Home Video continues to maximize what the Blu-ray format can do in terms of picture and sound.  With six times higher resolution than standard DVD along with the sonic excellence of Dolby TruHD, the film will be at its absolute pristine best.

“You're going to see, hear and experience so much more with this Blu-ray edition,” said Jeff Baker, WHV Executive Vice President and General Manager, Theatrical Catalog.  Viewing Gone with the Wind again on Blu-ray is like seeing it for the first time. You're brought into the saga of the war torn Tara so intensely, you feel as if all the characters literally come alive. At times, I felt as if I was on the set standing next to the camera watching Gable and Leigh as the whole scene unfolded."

Brand new to these editions is a bonus disc with three new outstanding documentaries:

·   1939: Hollywood's Greatest Year is a fascinating tribute to a year considered to be one of Hollywood’s greatest. This documentary, narrated by Kenneth Branagh, had its on-air premiere in July as part of TCM’s month-long festival saluting that year’s ‘bumper-crop’ of films.

·   Gone with the Wind: The Legend Lives On is an exploration of the legacy of this most beloved film through illuminating interviews, footage and visits to historical sites, events and museums.

·   Moviola: The Scarlett O'Hara Wars -- a 1980 WBTV Special, never before seen on home video.

This historic 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition,  limited and numbered, will be further enhanced with unique nostalgic premiums – a 40-page hardcover book with photos, production notes and more; a reproduction of the 1939 original program; eight 5” x 7” frameable art prints, and a CD soundtrack sampler.  The UCEs will be available in Blu-ray

for $84.99 SRP and DVD for $69.92 SRP.  A Two Disc Special Edition will also be offered with the film and commentary for $24.98 SRP.  The documentary The Making of a Legend will also be available as a stand alone for $14.97 SRP. Orders for all are due October 13.

Both WHV and TCM will be supporting partners in a 70th Anniversary celebratory weekend to take place in Marietta, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta and home of the “Marietta Gone with the Wind” Museum, Scarlett on the Square.  The weekend – November 13-14 – is sure to draw fans far and wide, and will consist of a gala re-premiere screening at the historic, newly refurbished Strand theatre, hosted by TCM’s Robert Osborne and complete with red carpet, replica of the original theatre facade, vintage cars from the ‘30s, and more. In addition, there will be a” Belles and Beaus” costume ball and “Gone with the Wind” authors forum.

About the Movie

Gone with the Wind is the grandest, most ambitious and spectacular piece of filmmaking in cinematic history. With more than 50 speaking roles and 2400 extras, the film is the quintessential Hollywood epic – considered a “must have” for collectors, and one that can be watched again and again for generations to come.

Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland star in Gone with the Wind, which for more than a half century has thrilled audiences with its eternal love affair, set in the South against the backdrop of the Civil War, between handsome Rhett Butler (Gable) and his sassy, headstrong heroine Scarlett O’Hara (Leigh). With each new generation, Gone with the Wind continues to grow in popularity as new audiences discover and embrace the David O. Selznick production of Margaret Mitchell’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn....about the extra stuff. Will the Two Disc SE be available in both Blu-ray and std. DVD?  The statement above is somewhat vague about this.

As with the Wizard of Oz the only blu-ray is the collector's edition with the high price tag.

Like Casablanca I am guessing a movie only blu-ray edition will be released about a year after this release. At least I hope so. The press release does not say if the extra content is upgraded to blu-ray or not. MGM: When The Lion Roars, was produced in 480i so that wouldn't look much better if upgraded.

I'm curious about why WB would now release a two-disc std. DVD edition....when they released a FOUR disc SE several years ago (which I own).
I bought the 4 disc collector's edition for about $20.  (I waited for a sale).  I don't need another collector's edition on blu-ray.  Just give me the option to buy a scaled down edition on Blu-ray.  I would like to upgrade to Blu-ray, but I guess I'll have to wait a year before I can, if they do it like they did Casablanca.

Quite an extensive package, but it would be nice to have a movie only option.  I find I have less time to watch all of the additional material.  Shouldn't some of that be available from the BD Live option?

The PR is unclear:

So the Blu Ray only has DD??   Elsewhere in the text it says it has TrueHD.

Is it just me or does the pic give one the impression that this will be a hacked-up widescreen release?

Yeah, I too will pass on the big box of extras at that price.  I can definitely wait for the eventual standard BD release.

I know you're kidding but there would be riots in the streets if that happened.

Did they do a new 4k restoration or have they just used the existing 2k one from 2004?

Well, they advertised an 8k transfer for North by Northwest, so maybe...

You can buy both Gone With The Wind and The Wizard of Oz Blu-ray from http://www.amazon.co.uk/ for $54 including shipping to the US. I think they are region free.

The only question is, are the extras the same (sans trinkets), and are they all playable on U.S. players?
I would have preferred a simple 2 disc release for multiple reasons, but after seeing the full feature list and photos of the collector's package, I'm feeling better about pulling the trigger on this (assuming the order at wbshop goes through). For me, this is an absolute essential library title. It was one of the discs I most treasured on LD, and I dipped twice on dvd. Since this should be the last time I purchase it on an optical disc format, I don't mind splurging a little bit.

BTW- the bare bones 2 disc 50th anniversary LD set me back $50 retail (in 1991 dollars). That's $10 more than I'm paying for the deluxe Bd set (again assuming the order still goes through). Hard to get to worked up when I put it in that context.

In regards to playback, all Warner titles are region free, so yes they are playable on US players.

I didn't make myself clear.  I was also referring to the PAL vs. NTSC issue.
All Warner titles are authored in the US, and all standard definition extras are in NTSC, regardless of which territory they are released in.

You can add North By Northwest for about 12 pounds. The UK gets this film in a standard blu-ray case instead of the book that many on this board dislike.

Remember, they used to charge more than what they're charging now on VHS! Were those clunky boxes it came in so expensive to make?
On the Amazon UK site the Gone With The Wind  blu ray is listed as having 5 discs. The Wizard of Oz blu ray is listed as having 3 discs and North By Northwest is listed as 1 disc. Could be the disc count is the standard DVD count.

Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio that is so yesterdays DVD !

I though Warner Brothers was going to go lossless from now on, whats the deal?  I honestly do not see any reason for Dolby Digital on any HD Bluray title unless the movie is long enough to warrent cutting corners on the audio.  Does anyone know why WB didn't do lossless on this title?  I have never owned this title and Bluray is the reason why I have decided to get back into classics, because of how good Bluray helps movies look.  I have held off on buying titles on Bluray because of the use of DD but it is hard to say if I will hold off on this title?  Especially if the video transfer is off the chart, I may just buy it anyway.
The press release states TrueHD audio for the blu-ray.

Read the second paragraph after the dateline.

would have bought this, but no point since all I want is the movie. extras are fine, but not a giant idiot box with gadgets and gizmos.
The commercial for the upcoming release of Wizard Of oz explicitly states the Bd will be available for a 'limited time only', so if you can wait about a year you'll be able to get it without all the crap.
I sold off my remastered 2 disc set (which I never even got around to watching) in anticipation of an HD release back in 2006 so I'm a bit sick of waiting for this.
GWTW is an even bigger favorite of mine, so this fall I'll be busy making up my own jacket art and making room in the closet for a couple big boxes.

I wonder if, when you guys are finally getting the stripped down Bds of these next year, we'll be having the same discussion over Ben-Hur and something else?

So does anyone know if MGM: When the Lion Roars going to be in Hi def ? When the DVD came out it was said that it didn't look great because it was produce on tape with a 480i resolution.
Is what is on blu-ray of Gone With The Wind the same as what has already been released?
