Any word on/about the Michael Jackson: Number Ones DVD?

So obivously this is a shamless cash-in on his death, but I saw a disc of Michael's music videos at costco today for pretty cheap.  While I'm not eager to also shamelessly cash in on his death by picking it up, if the music videos on there were uncut - like say the full half hour version of Thriller - I'd be all over that disc like a cheap suit. So - any ideas what the disc is like? Does anyone know if they edited the hell out of the vids? Are they reasonably intact? I'd like to know before I piss away 10 bucks on crap.

It's a good disc of his videos. There are several of them that have been released but none of them are truly complete. They each contain a different line-up of videos and some are the edited versions such as Black Or White.

You'll have to check out the reviews at Amazon to see which one suits your needs. Some devoted fans who really know their stuff have written reviews to tell you what's included and not included on each release and whether they're edited or the full versions. If you're looking for every video you'll likely have to pick up at least a couple of different releases. Even then, I don't think every video is available on DVD. Perhaps a new set will come out that truly has everything.

Number Ones isn't a cash in, it was actually released back in 2004 with Jackson's Number Ones collection, it's just gotten a resurge since his passing.

Truth is, there isn't a collection of ALL of Jackson's videos under one disc. You really need all four: Dangerous, History Vol. 1, History Vol. 2 and Number Ones to get the bulk and that still isn't everything.

We'll get there someday, just going to take some time.

Exactly It's NOT a cash-in. A simple check of Amazon shows when it was actually first released. Off the top of my head I don't think any of the video collections include Who's Loving You or the American Bandstand appearance. Both of these were put into heavy rotation on the music channels for a while.

Unfortunately, these incomplete video collections are quite common especially for some of the more popular video artists including Prince & Madonna. Their DVD's include some very obvious omissions.

FWIW, it's on sale at Best Buy for $7.99. I picked it up, and according to the sheet, these are the lengths of each video:

Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough (4:11)
Rock With You (3:22)
Billie Jean (4:55)
Beat It (4:56)
Thriller (13:43)
Bad (4:20)
The Way You Make Me Feel (6:43)
Man in the Mirror (5:00)
Smooth Criminal (4:16)
Dirty Diana (5:08)
Black or White (6:22)
You Are Not Alone (5:37)
Earth Song (7:29)
Blood on the Dance Floor (4:15)
You Rock My World (10:26)

I'm not super-familiar with his videography but if those times are accurate than "Thriller" and "Black or White" at least are clearly edited.

So it sounds like it's a good starting point, but lacking in places. Still, Costco had it for like 6 bucks - for that price, I think I could stand to be some editing here and there. Ok, I'll grab a copy when I'm there next.

And dont remember the run times, but Smooth Criminal was a WHOLE lot longer than 4:16. Something to the order of 10:00 or so, if I remember my MTV days. . . .

Thriller sounds about right, since it's actually only 15 minutes. Black and White is seldom shown in it's complete 10 minute form, you'll need either Dangerous or HIStory Vol. 1 for that and even then it's not exactly as it originally aired.

For the record, Smooth Criminal, Bad and The Way You Make Me Feel are edited down too. Bad and Way can be found in full on HIStory Vol. 1 while Smooth Criminal is on HIStory Vol. 2

The only videos unique to Number Ones that I know of are Man In The Mirror, Dirty Diana and You Rock My World.

Say it before, say it again, we need a complete video collection for Jackson on DVD, especially given so few have seen the videos for Cry, Butterfiles or the 30 minute version of Ghosts.

Well, I picked up the disc a couple of days ago - even edited down, it's still a worthwhile purchase. I'd forgotten how gloriously cheesy Thriller was - brilliant stuff that. And even in the shorter form, the music is still really good. All in all, I'd say that as a tide-me-over until I get the HIStory discs, this one suits my needs nicely.
