7.1 hd ma sound ?

Hello,
This is a first time post for me and I am not really an audiophile!
I have a Sharp BD-HP20u player that is supposed to decode all the  new
sound tracks DTS 7.1  HD MA etc. It is connected to a Denon 2808 CI
reciever via 1.3 HDMI. The BD player has no multi channel outs.I have installed 2 Boston rear back speakers to get 7.1 surround.
My Question: I insert a movie and choose the audio setup for MA HD 7.1.
When the movie plays the display on the Denon says DTS surround and the speaker display shows only 5 speakers working and the back rears output nothing.I have read the manuals for both pieces and can not figure it out.I would hope that someone on this forum could give me a few ideas. Thank You

If the speaker display is only showing 5.1 speakers working, that's the signal it's getting. What movie is it? You sure it has a 7.1 soundtrack? Just because you have 7 speakers connected, doesn't mean you'll hear 7.1 surround. Are you bitstreaming from player to receiver? If it's a 5.1 signal, you can set it to use Dolby Pro Logic IIx, and it will divide it up, to use the 7 speakers. Not very many movies have an actual 7.1 surround soundtrack right now. More info might help us figure it out............

Hi,
Thanks for responding.
I don't remember the movie titles but when I went to the setup menu it would allow me to choose 7.1 MA HD. Yes I am bitstreaming from the BD player.I would think that using Dolby Prologic IIx would not give me the same sound quality. Is that correct?

I doubt it will give you the same quality sound as dtsHD Master Audio, but the only place to get that is from blu ray. I mentioned that just to tell how to send a 5.1 signal to 7 speakers. It will also take a stereo signal, and send it to 7 speakers. So, you may like it for tv and regular dvds.

The 2808CI is supposed to decode the HD audio, from a bitstreamed signal. It's got to be a setting somewhere in the receiver's setup menus. I'm not familiar with that model, but I'm guessing that somewhere there's settings to tell it how to handle the signal it gets. All I can say is to double check the manual, and see if you missed something somewhere.

Maybe someone with the same receiver will chime in, and be more help.
Good luck!

Is it possible to return for a different player?  If this model # is accurate, unfortunately it's an old model that does *not* support DTS-HD/MA at all.  Either decode or bitstream.  It's also slow as hell to load discs & operate (my mother got one of these free with her TV, I cringe when I use it, although the audio isn't an issue on her 3.1 setup).

Here are the specs from Sharp:
Format

MPEG2/H.264/VC1 Yes

AC3 Yes

DTS Yes

Linear PCM Yes

DTS HD Yes

Dolby® Digital Plus Yes

Dolby® TrueHD (Lossless) (48kHz) Yes
If this is not what we are talking about then could someone tell me what BDplayer would be the best to buy for 7.1 HD/MA?

Anything newer will support 7.1 DTS-HD.  Out of the current crop I'd probably go for the LG 370, or the LG 390 if you prefer wi-fi, for fast loading times + Netflix.
