No 5.1 Sounds

I own a Denon AVR-897. A week ago while watching some HD programming, I noticed the panel lights from the Denon and sounds from my surround speakers were cycling off and on.  The next day while watching HD programming the AV's lights went out and the 5.1 sound stopped.  The "standby" green light is on, so I know the system is energized.

Strangely, stereo sound from standard definition came right through the Denon and out of the speakers.

What is causing this 5.1 malfunction?  What is the inexpensive fix?

The first thing to try is unplug the AC, let it sit a few minutes and plug it back in.  Sometimes that does the trick.

Unplugging the AC, better known as a hard reboot was the second thing I tried.  But, that did not help with the lost 5.1 audio.  I bet its a hardware problem.  I'm thinking a filter, or a switch.
