Trouble getting basic Dolby Digital to work

HI guys, new here. I am trying to get the "home theater" in my in-laws house somewhat set up. They have a Sony 5 disc dvd player and a Sony very generic 5.1/100watt receiver, standard fare handed out with the "kit packages" of a few years ago.

The dvd player is sending audio to the receiver via a coax digital cable.

THe problem is, the receiver won't play back audio in DD 5.1.

It is playing back in PCM 48khz 2 channel. I have run through all the settings and options I know of but nothing fixes it.

Anyone have any ideas that may fix this? Thanks

Let's start with the basic stuff first. Go into the players setup menu and see if there is an audio setting that downmixes 5.1 to pcm. If so, then change it to DD/DTS. Also, make sure it,s set to "Bitstream" and not pcm.

Some early dvd's default to stereo. Go into the dvd disc's main menu and select DD.

If neither one of these doesn't work (but I'm betting on the Bitstream thing) then give us the model numbers of the receiver and dvd player so we can look up the manuals.  Gene
