Samsung TIVO set top box

I own a Samsung TIVO SIRS4040R and it went on the fritz a while back, I moved into a new home and wanted to see if I could get it going. I had recorded several games and shows that I would like to rewatch but when I plug the set top box to my TV, it starts to load like normal then states that it has just a few more moments, then I get a green screen that says that there was an error that occurred and to plug in the phone line for 3 hours so that it can correct itself. Keep in mind I do not have DTV service anymore. I plug it in anyway and after a while the screen goes blank. None of the buttons work either on the box or on the remote. One thing I failed to mention is that after about 2 minutes on the green screen it reverts back to the screen where as if I just plugged it in awaiting to be “online” so to speak once again and does the same thing over and over. (almost as if it’s trying to restart or it’s cycling over and over) I called Samsung and the guy didn’t know what I was talking about and only offered me to turn it back in for a new re-furbished box. I told him this wouldn’t work because I don’t have service and all I wanted to do was watch the recorded shows I had on this box. Anyone have experience with this? Is there anything I can do to help with this problem without returning it and paying for a duplicate?

Technically you have a DirecTV DVR powered by TiVo software.  It is not a TiVo..  Not having D* service (DTV is the accronym for Digital Television) is not an issue.  I am also a member of the Tivo Community forum and I have seen this issue for years.  The most likely problem is a bad hard drive.  If you were still a D* subscriber I would recommend a new drive and a downloaded image from PTV Upgrade.  Since you aren't you have a nice looking door stop.
