Panasonic Blu-Ray Home Theater

I'm thinking of purchasing a Pasnasonic SC-BT203 Blu-Ray Home Theater.    It comes with a blu-Ray player, center, six speakers, and subwoofer.  It will be in a small condo so it seems perfect.   Here is my question.  I also have HD cable.   Will I be able to run my HD DVR sound thru this Blu-Ray player and get surround sound from cable sources that are broadcast in 5.1 surround.   It looks to me like this system only has optical in.     Thanks

It looks that way to me too, so no you won't. The lack of connectivity options is one of the main reasons for avoiding a HTiB.  Others are usually inforior speakers and lack of speaker choice; and the inability to swap out a broken component.

If you want to go the HTiB route, look at Onkyo, they at least give you a component style reveiver in most packages.  (Sony also has some decent choices, but I'm not much of a Sony fan.)

????  It *does* have optical inputs, 2 in fact, which means that he *will* be able to run cable source through and get DD 5.1 surround sound.

Now, mediocre speakers, inability to replace/upgrade are reasonable concerns, but if Richard is OK with that, it's reasonable bang for the buck at < $450.

My bad.  When the OP said it *has* an optical in, I inferred that he wanted to hook up an HDMI and switch through the unit.  On re-reading, he never said that.  If the HD cable box has an optical out it will certainly work.

Thanks what I get for responding between meetings.  I hope I'm not wrong again, as it hasn't been a good day.  I know, I won't read any responses until tomorrow.

Thanks for the replies.   For the $$$ this will be perfect for me.   I know it is not a "quality" surround system but will work until I get a bigger place and want to upgrade to a better system.

I do own a Panasonic SC-BT203 blu-ray home theater system that I have been very happy with! I live in a small home and whether listening to my ipod or playing a movie this system really does deliver alot of bang for your buck. I also have DIRECTV for my satellite provider (in HD, of course) hooked up to a Mitsubishi WD65737 DLP TV. Here in lies my question- how do I get 3D content on my tv? and is it even possible with a firmware upgrade to the blu-ray player to be able to play 3D blu-rays? The Mitsubishi should be 3D ready or so it says. Help please!

Matt
