Need new AVR to power 5.1 (B&W + SVS sub)

Hey guys,
I'm in the progress of upgrading my avr, getting latest dish dvr, getting oppo blue ray, searching for my first hdtv, but keeping my current speakers and sub.   I want to make sure I'm buying an AVR that can properly power my speakers and sub and produce a great picture via hdmi.   I currently use a Denon 3803 AVR that I believe is rated at 110 watts.   But I've read and not sure if I should be taking into consideration the ohms of the speakers, etc.   I'm leaning towards the Denon 2310CI, but not sure if 105 watts, etc is good enough for the speakers.

My viewing habits are sports, tv shows, dvds, soon to be blue ray and the occassional cd.  I especially like putting in a good movie and cranking it up :)

My current speakers are:
FRONTS:   B&W CDM 7SE
Power Handling (RMS): 30 - 150 W
Frequency Response: 40 Hz - 20 kHz ± 3 dB on refere
Sensitivity (dB): 90 dB
Impedance (Ohms): 8 ohms
Weight (lbs): 40.8 lbs.
Dimensions (w/h/d): 8.7/37.4/11.4 in. (width/height/
Description: 3-way 4th-order vented-box system
Real wood veneers: Black Ash, Cherrywood, Red Ash
Grille: Black Cloth

REARS:  B&W CM2
Power Handling (RMS): 120 Watts
Frequency Response: 65Hz - 20kHz
Sensitivity (dB): 89dB
Impedance (Ohms): 8 Ohms
Weight (lbs): 18.7 lbs
Dimensions (w/h/d): 12.8 x 7.9 x 10.9"
Description: The stand or shelf mount CM2 is ideal for the smaller room or where its compact size is important. The Kevlar mid/bass cone seen in many of B&Ws more expensive speakers contributes to the open mid-range and full, clear bass produced by the CM2.

CENTER:  B&W CSE
Power Handling (RMS): 30 - 120 W
Frequency Response: 50 Hz - 20 kHz ± 3 dB on refere
Sensitivity (dB): 90 dB
Impedance (Ohms): 8 ohms

SUB:  SVS 25-31PC+

Since your speakers are 8 ohms, you should be able to use any receiver you want. It's 4ohm speakers that need the extra power to drive them, and can cause a receiver to run hot. You can even use the Denon you have. Since the Oppo has the 7.1 analog outputs, you'll still be able to listen to the HD audio soundtracks from blu ray movies, with your current Denon (if that's why you were upgrading the receiver). Of course, it's nice to have a new receiver, with HDMI inputs. I'm thinking you may be getting the Oppo, because it plays sacd and dvd-audio, as well as blu ray movies? If so, since you'll be using the analog outputs anyway, you can use them with blu ray also, and save some money. If you have money for all new stuff................go for it!
Good luck!

Hi Rob,

The power difference between your current Denon and the new one is so small you would need an expensive microphone to detect the difference.  If your speakers sounded good with the old one, they will be fine with the new.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback fellas!   Good to know that I don't need to go over the top to power my speakers!

Ed - in regard to some of the questions you had, ultimately, yes, I want to upgrade the receiver to a newer one that supports hdmi.   It would greatly reduce the amount of wires I'm currently running.  I know of several people that have and use older oppo's and love them, so when i heard "universal + oppo" I figured that was a no brainer.   But recently, I'm getting asked if I play SACD or dvd-audio and the answer is no, not that I know of.   I'm strictly cd, dvd, and soon to be blue-ray.

So the question now is, do I really need this new OPPO bdp-83?  The only other selling point is people really like the new ABT chip in it, but if I get the Denon 2310CI, it too has an ABT chip.  Argh, maybe I don't need it afterall, but I really enjoy watching movies so I want the best picture/sound possible.

This is what I was thinking of going with, subject to change:
- OPPO bdp-83
- Denon 2310CI
- Dish 722 HD DVR (i've been with them for 10 years so thats a no brainer)
- 52-58" HDTV (haven't decided plasma or lcd as the area the tv is going is a bit tricky)
- All connected to AVR via HDMI, and one going to tv.

Thanks,
Rob

Oppo makes very nice equipment, and I've only heard good things about the BD player. I, personally, like sacd and dvd-a discs, so I would love to have an Oppo. I just can't afford one.

If you are a Pink Floyd fan, since you're getting the Oppo, do yourself a favor and get the "Dark Side of the Moon" sacd. It's unreal just how good it sounds. It's like hearing it for the first time............again.
Good luck with your stuff!
