AV receiver to add to 2-channel audio advice/help

I currently have a Rotel preamp and Rotel amp driving a pair of Vienna Acoustics speakers.  I’m happy with the audio quality of this setup in my room.  However, I would like to add home theatre audio qualities to this basic configuration.

I could upgrade the preamp to a preamp processor, and add more amps for the three extra channels, but I was looking for a (much) less expensive option as the audio quality of a movie is less important to me.

So I was thinking about how to integrate an inexpensive AV (5.1) receiver into the system.  (I’d rather not add an A/B switch for the speakers.)  I imagine the receiver must have preamp outputs for the main channels, and that these would be fed into the Rotel preamp.  The questions rise though about where to input the receivers preamp outs – would any available input be acceptable (AUX1, AUX2, Video)?  And how would the volume control work, where would I set the volume on the Rotel preamp in relation to the AV receiver?

And finally, if this setup sounds reasonable, could anyone recommend an inexpensive AV receiver for a 5.1 setup, that has preamp output for the mains, and digital optical audio in (from the blu ray) with all the latest 5.1 decoding technologies.

I know that’s a tall order, but thanks in advance, and any other advice would be appreciated.

Yamaha RX-V665 has preamp outs for all channels.  Just hook up the main outs directly to the power amp, if you need that to power your main speakers.  Another possibility is Onkyo 706.

There's absolutely no reason to keep the Rotel preamp, it just complicates matters and would do nothing for the sound quality anyway.

Hmmm, I hadn't thought of that .  Thanks for the input.

Follow-up question...

Will either the Onkyo (706) or Yamaha (665) receiver pass through the audio and video to the TV via HDMI while the receiver is off?

For most of my family movie watching I won't want surround sound, TV speakers are fine, and I'd like to leave the receiver off (to save energy).  Just put a DVD in the blu ray player and watch it on TV, receiver off.

Assuming this is how the receivers work, is it then easy to switch on the receiver and have the surround sound active (for movies I want the effect), or is there a setting in the receiver I'd have to switch on/off each time?

Thanks, I'm trying to learn!
