Universal Backlot Series of Claudette Colbert titles for November

Thread Starter
ClassicFlix is reporting a 6 film set of Claudette Colbert movies plus the Colbert featurette that was included on the recent Cleopatra special.  They include Bluebeard's Eighth Wife, Three Cornered Moon, Maid of Salem and the Egg and I already released in Ma and Pa Kettle set.  I hope the other two might be Arise My Love and The Gilded Lily.

Fantastic news. Thx Frank and thx Universal :)

Happy to have more Colbert. For years I was petioning for a Colbert set (if only just to get Cleopatra which hadn't been released to that point).
I'm assuming this is indeed a set akin to the Pre-Code set and not six individual releases? Hopefully we'll still get a few more individual titles in the Backlot series too (and please let one be Hold Back The Dawn)!.

PRIVATE WORLDS and THUNDER ON THE HILL?  I would hope that Warner Archive would bring out TOVARICH and IT'S A WONDERFUL WORLD.

Excellent news.  Can not wait to get my hands on this so it will be a long three months.

Great news!!! This collection is log overdue! Loved the titles mentioned so far.

I hope that, along the remaining, Universal includes the Gilded Lily. As for the 6th tilte, I would be happy to see anyy of the following"Arise my love, Zaza, Private Worlds or No Time for Love.

Now let's hope for a Mitchell Leisen box set (Remember the Night, Hold Back the Dawn, Lady in the Dark, Frenchman's Creek, Kitty, To Each his Own would be the perfect selection, as all of them deserves a dvd release).

Would love to see a Backlot Noir Set.

I'm really glad Universal is really following through and continuing with this Backlot series (note 4 titles earlier this month), instead of the usual one-off series with an early demise.  And they're actually going ahead with releasing all of these in this economy -- kudos to Universal, we should all support these releases if we can.

Well,

Reading the recent addition titles for rent in the classicflix page, I found out that the 2 remaining titles for the Colbert Collection are "I met him in Paris" and "No Time for Love". I hope they can release Gilded Lily later.

Again, I'm very glad with the annoucement.

This is a pleasent surprise.

Who's next? :)

Great news! Nice to see Universal continue with their backlot series! Hope they can come out with a Barbara Stanwyck set too at some point, with stuff like Remember the Night and Internes Can't Take Money.

I will definitely buy this.

This is indeed awesome news; Claudette's films of that period were extremely well-made and all had very good screenplays. In 1939, she was the highest paid woman in America, I believe.

It has been years since I have seen some of these films (New York's PBS station, Channel 13 aired some of them years ago) and I look forward to buying and watching these films again.

I second that.  More specifically, I would like to see a Paulette Goddard set.

I look foward to this set. Claudette Colbert has always been one of my favorite actresses . I wish Arise My Love had made the cut.

It seems like vintage and catalog films are being phased out so I am very glad to see this is coming.

Excellent news, and a definite buy for me. Claudette can do no wrong :)

Excellent!  I look forward to purchasing this set as there is little else coming out this fall. (So Far)

I'm consistently baffled by this.  Every other studio has been putting out Noir titles and boxsets as much as possible, while Universal sits on a virtual goldmine of Noir titles and seems hesitant to release a single one.  I don't recall any Noir titles being released by Universal since the 2-disc "Double Indemnity" several years ago.  What gives?
YES! Maid of Salem finally!  Thanks Universal!  Keep these Backlots coming!

Sorry, please delete.

I'll definitely be buying this. I hope we can get a Stanwyck and Veronica Lake set, too.
This really needs to be supported.  I recall the Carole Lombard and Mae West Collections about five years ago and that was the last we saw of those two stars along with Bing Crosby.  I would also like to see the rest of WC Fields.

Sounds like a great set! You can't really go wrong with Claudette Colbert! Now if we could only get more Deanna Durbin or a Barbara Stanwyck set!

Hopefully a lot of lovers of classic movies will support this release. I too would love to see Universal sets come out for Barbara Stanwyck, Veronica Lake, and would love more early Carole Lombard, Cary Grant, and Gary Cooper. Would love to see another pre-code set too!

I have already BLUEBEARD'S EIGHT WIFE and NO TIME FOR LOVE from a French and Italian DVD sets respectively, but will gladly blind buy the other 4. Pity I have to wait till November.

Now I'd really like HOLD BACK THE DAWN and TO EACH HIS OWN and a second pre-code set with Miriam Hopkins' films. Pretty please...
Very excited about this set! They only included one from the pre-code era...hopefully that means they will show up in Pre-Code Hollywood Vol. 2!

I’m very excited about this too. Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife is the only one I have seen and it’s a great screwball comedy. I’m looking forward to the others as Claudette was a very good actress and I have liked all the films I’ve seen so far of hers.

I agree with jdee28 about getting more early Lombard and Cooper out on dvd. I’d also like to see Clara Bow's talkies that Universal has as she is terribly underrepresented on dvd.

I’m so glad Universal is finally letting some of these Paramount films go and I hope they keep ‘em coming!

A must-have for me too, and I can only agree with the suggestions others have made.

Come on, Universal -- be bold!

This is a very welcome - and unexpected - release.

Here's to many more in the future!

This is a sure fire buy for me. Being a fan of Colbert I'm very happy that this set is being released. What burns me is why ,with all the films of hers still not released,Universal chooses to include The Egg and I instead of a film not yet released. The Egg and i has been out on dvd for years. I would have liked to see them include a yet unreleased film instead. There are so few classic dvd releases from Universal. When they do release something i would hope that they would release  new stuff and not double dip. Columbia is doing the same thing with a few of the box sets they are putting out . Unless there is something new being done to the double dipped film i don't see why they do it. I love getting classic films. But when the companies give you no choice on re buying the same movie , it just pisses me off. With that said ,i will still buy the set.
