VIDEO YES, AUDIO NO - Onkyo HT-S3200 5.1 channel and Panasonic DMP-BD60K

I purchased a Panasonic DMP-BD60K and an Onkyo HT-S3200, and set them up last night with my plasma.


Try and follow along this path and see what conclusions you may come to. I am stumped.

1. VIDEO CONNECTIONS: Panasonic-HDMI out to HDMI in on Onkyo Receiver- Onkyo HDMI out to Panasonic Plasma HDMI in

2. AUDIO CONNECTIONS: Panasonic Optical (Bitstream/PCM) out to Onkyo Receiver Optical in

I do not have a digital audio coaxial cable output on the panasonic blu-ray, (only optical) and the defaults on the onkyo receiver for BD/DVD are for digital audio coaxial, though I did assign the digital optical 1 on the receiver to DVD/BD. So I should be hearing it through the speakers.

The default settings on the Panasonic Blu-ray for Audio is set to BITSTREAM, but I have the option for PCM. I am not exactly sure of the difference, but it is set to bitstream now. 

The Receiver is a 5.1 channel, and does not have the ability to output TrueHD, DTS-HD Decoding. Also, the HDMI inputs are for flowthrough, and do not produce audio to the speakers without the additional audio connection of optical, coax etc.


Any advice would be a great help.

All your settings and connections look correct.  Maybe try optical 2 see if there is any difference?

Speakers all work on other sources I presume?
You see red light coming out of the optical cable when plugged into the BD with it on?
Are you sure optical plugs fully inserted both ends? (should "click" into place)
Do you have an older DVD player you can test with?

Stephen, To tell you the truth, I did not see the red light coming out of the optical cable when it was on. Could that be the bitstream/PCM settings I can choose?

Bitstream is correct, but that setting only affects the format being transmitted, you should see light out of the end of the cable you are going to stick into the receiver either way.  Not seeing the light, when BD on & playing, suggests one of the following:
- cable not fully inserted into the BD end
- broken cable
- broken BD player

Do you think it might have anything to do with the HDMI? The cable provides both audio and digital. Do blu-ray players as a default negate audio signals when HDMI is plugged in?  Example, Would it be different, if I connected the blu-ray player via component?

Also be sure you aren't doing anything silly like leaving a dust cap on the ends of the cable. Most cannot be inserted with the cap, but I suppose it's possible that some have a cap that still allows the cable to be inserted to some extent.

HDMI should have no effect, on those 2 equipment.
