CB HD Endorsed by China Toshiba back in the game

We thought HD DVD was dead but the Chinese government said not so fast.  CB HD, Toshiba's HD DVD, has ben endorsed by the Chinese government making CB HD the standard.  In China when the government endorses a product that product wins the format war.

It was reported several years ago China would not endorse BluRay because of the licensing fees.  Toshiba trying to salvage their HD DVD format more than likely offered very reasonable licensing fees and hit a home run.  This is a big deal other Asian countries may follow suit and hopefully this won't hurt the growth of BluRay.  Only time will tell.

That's it....time to start a big war with China!

Seriously, this could just strangle the whole high-def universe.  We don't need more than one format, world-wide!

Studios should refuse to licence their films for release on this format. If studios refused to release films on the format then it would be dead in the water, no matter what the Chinese government wanted. However, the greed of studios will win out and there will be two HD formats competing in Asia. The BD group is not blameless because their greed over licence fees has helped bring this about.

It should be interesting to see how this plays out since Toshiba is reportedly going to produce Blu-ray hardware very soon.

Well, if studios don't license the films to CB HD, then it will be easy to spot the pirated copies....

Warner Bros is supporting this format:

"Warner Bros has said that 100 titles will appear on the format by the end of this year and about 30 are already available.":
