Pioneer VSX-919AH or Yamaha RXV-565B

Hey guys,

I am now getting ready to buy a receiver and some speakers!

I think I have narrowed it down to these two receivers, thoughts? (Pioneer VSX-919AH or Yamaha RXV-565B)

Also, would these speakers be alright for the main floor ones? 120 watt 2-way floor speakers (Sherwood) $198. I wouldn't need an amp would I?

As for the other speakers, I plan to use some small Panasonic bookshelf speakers that I already own and buy a centre speaker later on. I would then just steal the sub from my other sound system, which I don't use anymore. :P

How does this sound (excuse the pun)?

Either receiver is fine but your speaker setup might need some re-thinking. First, I didn't know Sherwood made floor standing speakers. Are these new? Second, the fronts and center channel really need to be from the same series within the same brand. Otherwise when sound pans from the left thru the center and then to the right it will sound strange. Especially dialog. It would sound as if one person was talking on the sides and another in the middle! Using the Panasonics in the back doesn't present such a problem because there's usually not much, if any, dialog in the back and the rears are used mostly for "ambiance". I'd rather see you get a matching speaker system from Fluance or Energy (and there are many others. Browse the Speaker forum and ask questions over there) which can be had for $200-300. Not the greatest quality but better than what you are considering now.

In life, it's the journey and not the destination. In Home Theater, it is the destination. It might just take a little longer than you thought. Which I suppose would be a good thing in life.

I'm betting you wouldn't have a need for the best subwoofers out there like SVS or HSU but without knowing which one you're going to "steal" from the other sound system (Panasonic, maybe?) it probably won't add much to your new HT. I'd eventually up-grade it to one from PartsExpress.com or BIC etc. You can get an adequate one for around $100.

Edit: Gads!  I just noticed you're in Australia! We have a Brisbane in the S.F. Bay Area but I'm thinking it's not quite the same.  Anyway, being that far away I'm sure makes you choices for equipment a little more difficult. Let us know what's available in your neck of the woods and we will give our opinion on what might be best for you.

Thanks the advice. Maybe it's better if I save up and buy the speakers all together at a later date? Leaving enough time to listen to them all :D

With the receivers, I have been offered a Denon AVR-1909 for only $160 more. Is it worth the upgrade? If it's not, then the 919AH is in the lead for purchase. :D Managed to score a great deal on it, $840.

And thanks for your help. I will make sure I keep you guys updated with my quest for a set of speakers, too.

And yes, I'm from Brisbane in Australia.

Just an update. I have purchased the 919 receiver and a pair of Dali 'Concept 1' bookshelf speakers. I listened to them in store and was blown away by them! Of course they both come with a 7-day return policy so I am safe to return them if I choose to.

But the speakers will soon become the back speakers when I upgrade to floorstanding speakers and a sub, so it's not like they are going to be used that often in the future.

JB Hi-Fi (where I purchased everything) did a great job at supplying everything and were able to give me HDMI cables at cost-price. That's on top of the fact that I got nearly $400 speakers for $220 and a $1000+ receiver for $812!

Just a question, does it matter if a few of those tiny wires in the speaker cableing fell off when I went to cut the ends?

Glad to see you went with the Dali speakers instead of the Sherwoods. Speakers are much more important than electronics in the over-all performance of your HT. But don't skimp on the sub. Looks like you're well on your way to a fine sounding HT.

I looked at J-B Hi-Fi's website and you have things available that are not in the US like those Sherwood speakers and the Jensens.

As long as it's only a few strands you should be O.K. If it's more than a few then cut off the end and try again.

^ Yeah, only a few of those strands came loose when I pulled off the plastic protection around them. I will post pictures when I install the rear speakers tonight.

Thanks for your help!

On a side note, I went into a Bose store today and had a look around. Them they are expensive!

Yes, the Bose are expensive, and not worth the money they want for them. Steer clear of those. If you want something that size there are other brands out there that are way  better and much much cheaper.
