I just finished watching malibu shark attack (it doesn't deserve capital letters) and like many scy fy films the acting was bad, the script was bad, the production values were bad, the directing was bad. And like most scy fy films you see the moster in the first minute or two. There is no build up the the big reveal.
Yeah I know this is the theatrical movie forum, I'm getting to it. I got to thinking the great monster films I can think of (Franksenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Jaws, Alien, Aliens to name just a few) all take their time revealing the monster. With Alien you only get glimpes for nearly the whole film. Aliens had monsters we all knew about and the reveal was slow there too. I sure didn't feel cheated. I was limp after watching those last two films the first time.
Have there been any great or at least good monster films in which we see the monster right away. The mystery of what the monster is, is solved in the first few minutes. The films is just made so well, the tension still gives the viewer his money's worth.
