Multiple iPods/iphones and notes, I think I lost all my old notes...

On my iPod touch I had roughly 25 notes.  I synced that one last time, wiped it and gave it to my nephew when I got my iPhone.  Since getting the iPhone I didnt think much about it and maybe added 2-3 new notes.  I then had need of some of the info stored in the notes on the old touch...  And they are gone, both on this iPhone and in Mall.App

Any ideas how I might get those back?  I wonder if I put a new ipodtouch/iphone in it and told to restore from the old backup if it would work, probably have to make sure it has the right firmware level tho.

 I know you supposedly synch iPhone notes with Mail, but beyond that it is a mystery to me -- I have never seen my notes in Mail.  Help?
