I mistakenly ran my Panasonic 50G10 plasma in torch mode for about three hours after it came out of the box. Can this damage a plasma? I ask because the picture seems too dark to me especially in THX mode. The lack of light in THX mode just seems unacceptable to me.

You're fine.
Is the contrast turned up in THX mode?
Are you watching in the dark while using THX mode?

Greetings
THX mode designed for a reference viewing environment. A room with really good light control ... possibly even a bat cave.
Use that mode in an environment less than reference ... and it will seem too dim ...
Like that by design.
If you want more light output, choose one of the other modes like Vivid/Standard for day time and use the custom mode to give you something compatible for night viewing with a few lights on in the room.
Should be noted that the THX standards part of it don't apply to the modes outside of the THX mode.
regards
