Help on fairly basic set up

Hello all... first time posting here. I'm getting a new TV in about a week which will finally get me HD. I had my previous TV for a while which was a flat screen (not flat panel) 32" standard definition TV. It was a nice TV and was all I needed (college student) but after moving with that TV twice before, I finally decided to sell it and spend some money on a less bulky TV for my new apartment. Previously, I didn't really care to upgrade the sound system since my TV was behind the times I guess you could say.

I plan on getting a couple adapters to temporarily run my klipsch computer speakers (2.1 set up) since that's probably better than the usually weak speakers built into TVs. But, towards the end of the year, I might have some money saved up to drop on a simple system. With what little I know and have been able to research, I was thinking of sticking with a 2.1 system, or maybe skipping the sub if I can get decent bass out of the front speakers, since I will be living above someone.

Now for some of the specifics. I'm looking for good sound (obviously), but I also want something that will look decent. I personally consider these kinds of things to be both functional and decorative. I'm by no means an audiophile (if I spend enough time here, I might end up as one), but I definitely do appreciate good sound quality. If it comes down to it, I am willing to sacrifice attractiveness for quality sound, since that is the primary goal of speakers. These will be set up in my living room which is 12' x 15'. The room is mostly closed off, but the apartment is a loft design, so it is open to the bedroom above with ceilings at around 20' I'm guessing. My couch will most likely end up opposite the TV on the 12' stretch. I'm estimating my budget to max at $700-800. So for now I'm just going to say I'm looking at spending maybe $500 on speakers. My plan was to get a decent pair of floorstanding speakers, and maybe adding a sub if I had the money (or adding one at a later point). It will be used for TV for the most part, but movies and gaming fairly often as well. I had been looking at the boston acoustics CS226 in cherry. The few reviews I've read seem to show that they are good quality for the money. I've also found some good reviews for the fluance speakers saying that you get a lot for your money.

Now, I'm not even going to try and claim that I know much about this or that I know what I'm talking about at all. So if I'm going in the wrong direction here, please point me in the right direction. Any tips or guidance is much appreciated.

I'd go for a 3.1 system.  A center channel will anchor the dialog to the screen. And get a sub, at least eventually. You don't need to use it all the time (mine are usually turned off) but it's nice to have when you can use it.

I bought Boston CS-226 towers, a CC-226 and a pair of C-23's on TheNerds.com and ElectronicsExpo.com (thru Amazon) for $495 shipped and they're O.K. for the price but getting a pair of better bookshelves for fronts and matching center, something like the Infinity Beta 20's and a 250, along with a good sub will sound much better. But I couldn't convince my brother either. He wanted towers.  But, then again, so did I.

.TheSpeakerCompany offers reasonably priced towers with passive sub-type woofers and are said to sound pretty good but I've never heard them. Look kinda bland, though.

Other speakers to consider are Energy and Infinity Primus 362's when on sale at Fry's. (I cant get the curser to the right of this stupid Smiley!!!)

Thanks for the tips. If I see the infinity 362 on sale, that might work but at full price, that's a tad out of my range. How often do they go on sale? The energy speakers seem to be the best option out of those otherwise. I'm still looking around and still have at least a couple months anyways, so no need to rush and spend more than I need to. Thanks again.

Thee P-362's used to go on sale for $129 a piece every month or so and a couple of times they were priced at $99 each! (in-store only). But it has been a while. This thread in the Bargains Forum keeps pretty good track of them. Looks like they were $99 last month.

That's good to know. Do they list when they're on sale, or do you just have to check with the store? The closest one is like an hour away from me, which would still be worth it, but it's quite a drive lol. From what I've been reading, fluance seems to be the best value, especially in my price range. If I can manage to catch those infinity speakers on sale, then I'll probably end up going for those... otherwise I'm currently leaning towards the fluance.

We usually find out about the really good sales at Fry's via the printed adds in the newspaper. Un-fortunately their in-store sale prices and on-line sales are usually different.

Thanks for all the advice so far. I ended up deciding to save some money and go with a 720p TV instead... As much as I like to be up to date on technology like that, all the things I read were saying that it wouldn't be noticeable until about 45", especially at a regular viewing distance. Since I'm saving a bit of money on that, I'm thinking I'll be able to put something together sooner than I was thinking. Unless I come across something better at around the same price, I'm probably going to go with the fluance ES-1 to start off with. I'm not sure what center I'm going for and I'll add the sub a little later. I'm working on finding a receiver in the $200 range for now. I've had a few recommendations for some in the $400 range, but I think that's a bit much for now.

Just a few observations:
1 - Fluance are internet direct AFAIK.  Have you auditioned them?  Whatever your ultimately buy, you should audition as much as you can just as a point of reference.
2 - While defining quality sound is obviously subjective, I would think there are many speakers, especially bookshelves that would sound better for $400+/-.
3 - If I were a value/budget conscious speaker shopper ultimately looking for an x.1 HT setup, I'd skip the floorstanders and head straight to the bookshelves.  One of the few reasons to go for towers over bookshelves is better bass without a sub, but those fluance in particular have less bass response than many bookshelves available for half the price.  (Of course that doesn't mean you'll like how they sound...)
4 - The center should match your mains and I'm not even sure fluance makes a center to match those es1's.  Even if you went with fluance speakers, you should get the front 3 speakers matching.

Good luck

Thanks for the tips. I'll take a look at some bookshelves as well then. I dont believe fluance makes a center to match the ES-1 unfortunately. I was aiming for floorstandings since I'll be going a few months without the sub, but maybe even longer. I definitely dont want to get something that will end up disturbing neighbors.

If you want cheap and "OK" sound, Fluance is hard to beat.  Check out the SXHTB+ 5.0 setup.  They sound 'good enough' and will get you by until you have the funds to upgrade.  I lived with these (plus a very nice Velodyne sub) for about 18 months.

I have not heard their subs, but I did get a description from a friend who did.  It sounds like they are very 'boomy'.  Not the best attribute for home theater.  Perhaps you can get this 5.0 set and start saving for a good sub instead of buying a cheap one.  $400-600 or so is all you need to get a good sub..  Check out SVS when you are ready.

I agree with bookshelves as long as you have the good sub first....
