Tron Legacy - Page 3

Does anybody know if this is being filmed and rendered in actual 3D or will it be a conversion?

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Tron: Legacy Limited Edition (Five-Disc Combo Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy + Tron: The Original Classic Special Edition Blu-ray)
Tron: Legacy (Five-Disc Combo Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy + Tron: The Original Classic Special Edition Blu-ray)
Tron: Legacy (Four-Disc Combo Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy)

^ According to the HTF report from Comic Con, it was shot using a new version of the cameras used to shoot Avatar (so it's real 3-D and not yet another conversion).

Excellent news. Thanks Travis.

I'm actually quite happy if the 3D will be better than what I've been seeing lately. All of these conversions "after the fact" have really soured my excitement for seeing new movies in 3d

That certainly doesn't mean I'll rush out to see Tron Legacy in 3D unless I really feel it warrants it.

I do think the previews look great, but I'm hoping they keep some of the quirky "80's ness" of it. I really hope they leave a lot of the in game rules intact, like the bikes riding on rails, but I'm afraid they'll throw that out the window.

A radio station has put samples (?) of some of the Daft Punk soundtrack online now at:

A look at the new Light Cycle from the upcoming TRON: Legacy from the Comic-Con floor. I must say, the more I hear and see for this new film, the more I am getting excited.

I guess I'm having mixed feelings about the film. One of the comic books coming out that's supposed to take place between the first Tron movie and the sequel is called "The Betrayal."

I'm going to guess that it's Alan Bradly (the original Tron in the first film) who will be ultimately revealed to be the villain and trapped Flynn Sr's character in the digital world (again) when Jeff Bridges character comes to him one night (talking about how he's going to change humanity). And this finally causes Alan to freak out and go bad.

One of my theories is that Lori (Cindy Morgan's charactere) in the first film ultimately chose and married Flynn, which turned Bradly bitter, And Lori and Flynn had Sean Flynn.

I do not like this theory of mine.

But it's been said that Boxleitner's character (Bradley) does show up latter in the digital world, and I'm guessing that's when the big reveal is made.

That's why I'm not sure about sequels. Sometimes they take good characters and ruin them.

Tron Legacy Trailer #3.  Oh....My......God!

The new trailer is awesome.

I still have concerns over the younger version of Jeff Bridges still looking very CGI especially when he speaks but I can't wait for the movie!  Already bought my midnight ticket and ready to stand in line!

I don't see it posted, but here is Daft Punk's mini video for Derezzed:

There's an HD 1080 version.

I can't see it from where I'm posting from, but there is an emcee type person with a cane.  This character just irks me.  These KIND of characters irk me.  It's the only thing I've seen which brings my excitement over this down a notch.

BTW - I HATE that Google now highjacks your URLs when you try to highlight a link and right-click/copy it.  It's making me want to switch to Bing.

Is that song just background ambient? Or is it a real theme? It seemed very simple, and dully repetitive, not supporting the visuals at all.

What is in the spoiler tag below isn't really a spoiler but I don't want anyone to misinterpret my theoretical musings based on the information in the trailers of why the unreal CGI younger Flynn works on a story level as a spoiler. I have no additional information than anyone else watching the trailers.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I think it underlines the point: he's probably not real in the movie either as he appears to be a creation of the MCP based on the younger Flynn it has in its memory (and perhaps is the "new" MCP himself using Flynn for his "avatar" since the David Warner-based MCP is deleted, i.e. dead). We can infer this because in the trailer he says, "I'm not your father." So not only is he CGI for us the audience but he is real CGI in the movie's story too.

Except even in the trailers we see flashbacks of young (CGI) Flynn in the real world.

Yeah, but it's Michael Sheen. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

It's an official video promoting the film, tho I wouldn't call it a proper music video, more like a trailer for the soundtrack.  The details of which came out the other day:

It's my understanding that the score is one thing, but there are also songs inspired by the film.

It's electronic music, so it's supposed to be dull soulless dance music.  :)

Cannot wait for this next month

I made the mistake of walking through the toy aisle at Target, and saw the new movie merchandise, so the identity of Flynn's digital doppleganger has probably already been spoiled for me. ;)

I downloaded the first song available on itunes the other day. It is called Derezzed.

I also found the toys at Target. Bought myself one of the light cycles for my desk.

I like electronica and a couple of Daft Punk songs. That one though was particularly monotonous. That's fine for background ambient in a movie, but it seems an odd choice as a promo song.

Seeing the Tron trailer on TV (living room, big screen, surround) was much more compelling to me than any of them on my computer. That suggests movie theater experience could be worthwhile.

Saw the Tron toys the other day as well.  Stood there for several minutes trying to decide if I should buy a light cycle or not.  The ID disc was pretty cool as well.

Tron Legacy has had some mixed reviews. One of our British papers called it 'plotless' but liked some of the visuals, while Variety gave it a fairer review, here's a spoiler free excerpt -

Quote:
Visually light-years ahead of the 1982 original and yet strangely old-fashioned in the story department, "Tron: Legacy" plays like the world's most impressive screensaver -- a flashy, fetishistic showcase of what bikes and bodysuits might look like in a future designed by renegade Apple employees. While 21st-century effects and a cutting-edge dance score make this a stunning virtual ride, the underlying concept feels as far-fetched as ever. Still, the Disney tentpole's 3D-enhanced spectacle offers enough to draw legions to first-time director Joseph Kosinski's reverential reboot, which should set high scores worldwide (compared to an OK $33 million for the earlier version).

Commercials helmer Kosinski hails from a background in architecture and visual effects, and what the design-oriented director lacks in narrative instinct, he makes up for in large-scale vision. If "Tron: Legacy's" primary raison d'etre was to relaunch Lisberger's world in such a way that it could support not only movies but also games, merch and themepark attractions, then Kosinski more than satisfies the job requirement. Building on blueprints from that first film (including such classic vehicles as the Recognizers and the Solar Sailer), Kosinski creates a world we'd love to explore for ourselves, using the 3D to enhance the immersive experience: Light Cycles literally materialize out of thin air, while the action spills not only "off the grid" but off the screen as well.

Every bit as important as the pic's impressive visuals is its Daft Punk score, which hails from an entirely different dimension from conventional film compositions, establishing the tone for the whole enterprise. You don't just hear the music, but feel it reverberating in your bones -- an energy on the same sonic wavelength as the film's vehicles and costumes, combining the flickering hum of fluorescent tubes and the insistent beat of a futuristic engine.

Those bodysuits, by the way, are now sexy, jet-black foam-latex numbers with built-in lights of various colors, rather than the unflattering white spandex of the original (which vfx guys hand-illuminated via backlit animation) -- not that folks will be comparing things too closely. Although the 1982 film has its own cult-like following, mostly among geeks and stoners, Disney has strategically allowed the DVD to go out of print. That means younger auds will discover this slick film first, buying into the sequel's radically upgraded look before having a chance to revisit its clunky prototype.

Can't speak to the film, although the reviews have me nervous.  I'll still be checking it out, but with negligible expectations.

I do want to praise Daftpunk's score.  I've been listening to it quite a bit since it's release a week ago.  It's incredible stuff.  I highly recommend it to score fans.

I'm seeing it Thursday at midnight in 3D.

I don't care what reviewers think about this film. I'll be seeing it at my earliest convenience.

Roger Ebert liked the original, (IIRC, it was shown at one of his film festivals) so I'd be interested in his thoughts if no one else. Legacy is pretty much critic proof at this point anyway.

Is it going to be important for one to be familiar with the original?  I'm somewhat interested in seeing this but the original film is OOP so it's going to be hard to track down a reasonably priced copy unless I can find one used somewhere

^^

It should be available most places to rent - assuming that's an option.  there's always ebay or amazon marketplace for a cheap copy.

I'm surprised it's not going to show up on tv... Disney Channel, etc.  There was speculation Disney didn't want to issue the film on Blu in advance of the movie as they didn't want to alienate today's kids (some apparently find the graphics laughable... and I guess they would looking at it in 2010 eyes).

Still.. I put it on for my 7 year old when he was home sick from school; coincidentally about three weeks before the test footage came out properly (as opposed to bootleg cam that'd been circulating).  He loved it and went nuts when I showed him the test footage without introduction.
