Sony Releases: They Still Can't Get it Right

Why is it that Sony still can't manage to get it right? Here, we've been waiting for Sony to release the last few seasons of All in the Family, Barney Miller, The Jeffersons and now, what does Sony do? They release a huge boxed set of all first seasons from Norm Lear. Now, they're releasing "Fan Favourite episodes from All in the Family, Barney Miller, The Jeffersons."

What in the living daylights is Sony doing? This is why I do not support and I encourage other consumers to not support these type of collections and fan favourite releases. Why should we support these releases when they can't even finish releasing those shows that have more than made their way through their run?

Side-note, but related to Sony:

I love how some people are willing to be sympathetic towards Sony by saying "Oh, you can't blame Sony if the many shows that they've abandoned haven't sold well."

Actually, you can. You CAN blame them for the following:

1) Not doing any promotion to let people know that they're available.

2) Cramming so many episodes onto one disc ("227" comes to mind)

3) The only extras being minisodes (who would wanna watch those?)

4) Pricing them way too much.

(And this is my favorite)

5) Throwing in cut versions of certain episodes of certain shows, when uncut versions exist have been released on VHS tapes from Columbia House (Some of the cut episodes of "Sanford and Son" and some of the cut episodes of "Soap" come to mind).

Sony seems to do ok with the features but can't get classic tv right?

This is odd :)

I can't say about the others but Barney Miller season 3 was just released this past Sping. And after a long hiatus Night Court season 2 finally came out this Spring to. So Barney Miller may just be on track to finish and Maybe Night Court is back also.

Maybe, But Barney is averaging nearly a year between releases ... and Night Court, even longer.

However, Night Court complaints are for the "Warner Brothers Releases: They Still Can't Get It Right" thread.

Sony doesn't have something to do with every abandoned TV Show on DVD... just most of them.

I made the same mistake with The Mary Tyler Moore Show which someone nicely pointed out is from 20th Century Fox.  It is just that Sony has abandoned so many shows.

May bad...I went to look up the release date of Barney Miller season 3 on Amazon and saw Night Court seasons 1 and 2 with it so I made a bad assimption that they were released by the same group. Not all bad though since Night Court seasons were on sale I couldn't resist picking them up.

In an attempt to be positive, even though I do agree that Sony is horrible at releases, maybe these releases will spark sales from AITF and Different Strokes and get them going again.

What's insane is they just DID some of this with the Norman Leer Collection! Just get the season sets done for the love of Pete!

Is this a topic that really warrants a new thread? I mean there's a thousand bitch and moan threads that already exist.

Ditto Brad, on Barney Miller.  That one's one of my all-time sitcoms.  Sony sure made us wait a long time between S1 & S2.

Whether it's fair to Sony or not, they have the reputation for abandoning a lot of TV/DVD shows.  I do have to give Sony a  for Bewitched, "Jeannie", and Charlie's Angels, which it looks good for the Angels to complete.

I'm still amazed that Sony released both the B/W & colorized early Bewitched and Jeannie S1 sets.  That gave us that prefer the original B/W sets the choice to buy them.

I wouldnt place bets on Angels since it took forever to release season 4. I think Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie are the only two good stories to come from Sony.

Truer words were never spoken. And they need to continue to be spoken until the message is received.

As for the "Fan Favorites", where can we vote on them so that we can push the voting towards episodes in seasons unreleased on DVDs yet?

I too have a feeling that Charlie's Angels will be completed.  It took Sony a long time to finally release the third season of The Partridge Family and then the final season came out soon after.  It is hard to see how they make their decisions though!  They also finished Starsky and Hutch, which is another one I thought was abandoned after the third season.  I'm also glad they released Gidget.  I guess at this point we just have to hope that once or twice a year they surprise us by releasing something long thought to be abandoned?

Still waiting for FLYING NUN season 3. I'd expect that will come out eventually.
