Pre-90s catalog on Blu - A comprehensive list - Page 10

Added the Following:

Big Country (1958) (MGM) - coming to Blu-ray 5/24/11

Big Jake (1971) (Paramount) - coming to Blu-ray 5/31/11

Legend (1985) (Universal) - coming to Blu-ray 5/31/11

A Man Called Horse (1970) (Paramount) - coming to Blu-ray 5/31/11

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) (Paramount) - coming to Blu-ray 5/31/11

Rio Lobo (1970) (Paramount) - coming to Blu-ray 5/31/11

For those that are wondering, Legend is listed as "Ultimate Edition, 3-Discs", so it looks like it'll have the multiple cuts.

And May/June is clearly "release Westerns for Father's Day" in Paramount and MGM/Fox's view, which is most welcome.

Brandon,

What source is saying those dates?  I can't find any retailer listing them yet.

Brandon,

thought that one was missing, but then Quigley Down Under came out in 90, anyhow it is a walmart exclusive as well

Yeah, it's an arbitrary cutoff, but there are simply so many catalog releases for the 90s and later that it would be too difficult for me to keep up with. The 80s are getting difficult at this point alone (which is, of course, great news).

The only two exclusives I can find from this latest group is Quigley Down Under and The Big Country.  The rest of them aren't listed as exclusive like those other two titles.

Removing Guns of Navarone until a new date is announced.

"Once Upon a Time in the West" is the best Blu-Ray news so far this year. banana.gif

Wal-Mart exclusive on "The Big Country"!!!thumbsdown.gifthumbsdown.gifthumbsdown.gifthumbsdown.gifthumbsdown.gifthumbsdown.gifthumbsdown.gif

I haven't shopped at Wal-Mart for 15 years and don't plan on starting now.  How long do these exclusives usually last?  I've put off buying the DVD version of this for quite some time and now I'm going to have to wait even longer.

You don't have to wait even longer. You could just buy it from Wal-Mart.  It's not exactly my favorite store, either, but what's the big deal about running in to just buy one movie?  Or, just order it online and you won't even have to set foot inside.  Strangely, I've even gotten discs with a "Best Buy exclusive" sticker via Wal-Mart's website.

I guess Mothers don't get blu-rays - Mother's Day was completely passed over this year (I thought at least we would get the Rodgers and Hammerstein stuff from FOX)

Great news about "Once Upon a Time in the West" - I guess this means "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is coming in September

Yay! "The Big Country" from MGM...can "The Great Escape" be far behind?

You're right, I don't have to, but i will.  I will not shop at Wal-Mart - PERIOD!!  Hopefully it's no more than 3-6 months.frown.gif

Watch it Carl. There that 'tude coming through again. tongue.gif

My guess is there are folks who don't like he walmart business model
Of treating employees like cattle and coming into small towns and essentially
Taking over all the busines of the town.

There's a whole list of reason, but we're not allowed to discuss those sort of things on this forum.  Tony hit on a few of them, but you would not have a hard time finding many more with a quick internet search.  There are a number of websites that track and report the things that Wal-Mart does.  I'll leave it at that.

Looking forward to both "Once Upon a Time in the West" and "Big Country". I feel fairly confident that "Once Upon a Time in the West" will get the right treatment likes it's DVD's in the past. I'm not so confident about "Big Country" and the price point of just $10 from Walmart for pre-order doesn't exclude confidence. The DVD was barely watchable. I really hope "Big Country" gets a decent treatment. It's a great movie.

I have similar concerns especially at that price point of buying it from Wal-Mart for less than 10 bucks.

Which is still several dollars below the price of most catalog titles whether it's the 16.99 MSRP or below $10.

I actually don't have any concerns about The Big Country since I believe it has already went through a restoration by The Film Foundation, http://www.film-foundation.org/common/movies/film_details_v2.cfm?QID=888&clientID=11004&sid=2&ssid=7, and this new restoration hasn't been released on DVD much like the Film Foundation's restoration of Once Upon a Time in the West but was screened in 2007.

Some decents in there.

Money For Nothing is very good w/ john Cusack.

The story is a little sad for the Guy this movie is about.

He did not have a good life and ended it life just after the film was completed.

Joey Coyle.

Yep, that's how I see it.  MGM releases have lately been tied to $19.99 MSRB over the past year, and the exclusive titles released at Best Buy and Target that I have bought , which were also sold at sale prices of $9.99, have been large improvements over the DVD counterparts.  All the blu-ray classic releases I've gotten from MGM have been well worth the money.  I'm fairly sure the reason they are as cheap is that they either don't include any special features, or re-use the DVD features, similar to "vanilla" WB blu-ray releases.  The Big Country will be a Day 1 purchase for me.

I find it interesting that, after hearing that MGM's pre-bankruptcy business plan fell through when Wal-Mart forced them to have their DVD's sold at a loss, that MGM is still somewhat dependent of Wal-Mart to maximize sales.  Is there going to be a Shop-ko exclusive wave coming in the near future?

I can't think of where else to post this so forgive me if I intrude.

Come June, we'll get late-flowering Peckinpah with Cross of Iron being released by Optimum in the UK and by Kinowelt in Germany on BD. Extras come courtesy of Mike Siegel, a fervent Peckinpah fan and author of the excellent documentary Passion and Poetry: The Ballad of Sam Peckinpah.

They will be:

PASSION & POETRY - SAM PECKINPAH's WAR 46min; an excerpt from the main documentary featuring James Coburn, Senta Berger, David Warner, Vadim Glowna, Roger Fritz, Katy Haber & Sam Peckinpah.

- 5 featurettes with 1976 on set audio interviews:
ON LOCATION - CROSS OF IRON: SAM PECKINPAH (5:06)
ON LOCATION - CROSS OF IRON: JAMES COBURN (5:30)
ON LOCATION - CROSS OF IRON: JAMES MASON (6:05)
ON LOCATION - CROSS OF IRON: MAXIMILIAN SCHELL (4:35)
ON LOCATION - CROSS OF IRON: DAVID WARNER (3:14)

- featurette KRÜGER KISSES KERN (8:27)
- featurette LETTERS FROM VADIM & SAM (3:48)
- featurette VADIM & SAM - SON & DAD (5:55)
- featurette CUTTING ROOM FLOOR (4:19)
- featurette STEINER IN JAPAN (1:55)
- featurette MIKE's HOMEMOVIES - Steiner meets Kiesel again (7:16)
- Trailer Germany (3:10)
- TV-Spot USA (0:30)
- Trailer USA/UK (3:42)

Mike had planned so much more, but was apparently beaten by the release deadline. Of course, we don't know anything yet about the transfer (though it's being touted as 'digitally restored' for what that is worth) or available soundtracks.
