Aspect Ratio Problem

Hi Everyone,

I have a philips HD LCD widescreen tv and a onkyo sr706 receiver and directtv.  When I watch HD stations the aspct ratio is perfect, but when I watch standard def stations the picture is zoomed in and cutoff on the top and bottom.  I've tried changing all the settings that i can think of on both the receiver and tv to stop this, but I just can't seem to figure out how to get the aspect ratio correct.  I've tried changing the zoom on both the tv and receiver, but no luck. If you have any ideas please help.  Thanks.

Besides the aspect settings on the TV & receiver, there are also settings on the DirecTV satellite receiver that can affect this.  Make sure your TV shape is set to 16:9, & you want to use a "letterbox" or "pillar box" mode rather than anything like zoom/stretch/crop.  Usually there is a "format" type button on the satellite remote.  Normally you leave TV on its std 16:9 mode, sometimes called "full" (I don't know the terminology on Philips), and just manipulate with the DirecTV.  It can also depend on whether you are using "native resolution" output on the satellite or not.

On the 706 I'd use use "through" mode, turn off upconversion, maybe get it out of the equation so fewer variables to deal with.

If you can't figure things out, supply model #s of the satellite receiver & TV.
