Install of a Denon AVR 1709...

Just got a new Denon AVR 1709 and somewhat upgrading my Bose surround sound system. All speakers working normally...all five plus the woofer. I got TV working fine but having some challenges with devices. I find the manual insufficient...not enough narrative.

But let's start with plugs. I'm using the analog type jacks. don't know if upgrade to S video would be helpful or not. I'm plugging up a VCR/DVD player and/or a CD player but get no video or audio. Working to troubleshoot both connections and as well if the internal settings are set where they are suppose to be.

So, looking for someone that has worked through this drill that can expedite my journey...thanks.

You have to give exact model #s of everything if you need detailed help.

Generally for a DVD/VCR, you want to use separate connections for the DVD & VCR as they are usually not integrated.  Use component video (green/blue/red jacks, usu labeled Y/Pb/Pr) for DVD video, coax or optical digital out for DVD audio.  For the VCR side use the yellow/red/white AV cables.
Plug the outputs from the source into the inputs on the receiver labeled for those functions.
The component video "monitor out" from the receiver has to be connected to the TV and the TV set to that input.

In the receiver setup menu, the main thing is make sure that "video convert" is on (p. 26 manual), and do the "digital in assign" (p. 25) and point the DVD function to the digital audio in that you actually plugged into.

I thought I had included the model # (Denon AVR 1709) or is there something else?

Interesting note about the DVD/VCR not be integrated...I'll go back through those connections as well.
good points I'll go back thru and check...thanks Stephen

You mentioned absolutely nothing about the model #s of your TV, DVD/VCR, or any of your other sources.  Those matter if you need help knowing exactly where to plug things in, as different models can have different numbers and types of input/output jacks.

Ok. My LCD is a JVC LT-32EM49. I currently have the Receiver plugged into the top two components jacks.

I picked up a red/blu/grn cable and an S video cable.

I played with the settings and I say play because I had to figure out how to just move around and set settings.

I had the surround speakers set up so all five were playing but now only front right and rear left play. Not sure what I did. When I "test" only the front three test. The rears are silent.

Ok...thx

That doesn't sound right at all.  You probably need at least 2 green/blue/red component cables.
The connections should be:
1. Y/Pb/Pr green/blue/red from DVD -> receiver corresponding "DVD in"

2. optical or coax digital audio out from DVD -> corresponding digital input on receiver

3. AV yellow/red/white from VCR -> receiver "VCR in".  (S-video in place of the yellow *might* work for this, but no guarantees, you didn't supply the DVD/VCR model #)

4. Y/Pb/Pr green/blue/red from receiver "monitor out" to corresponding "component input" on the JVC (recommend input 5)

5. (optional, only if you have cable/antenna feed going straight into the TV, using the TV tuner)  Optical from JVC "optical out" to an optical input on the Denon.

6. (optional, unneeded if you have the "video convert" on)  Yellow from "monitor out" on receiver to input 4 yellow "video" in on the JVC.  (Again, S-video may or may not be able to be used instead of this).

I do get video and audio so its functional but agreed, its hardly optimal. Appreciate your patience.

I should add that cable comes in and splits to TV and to cable box.

JVC DVD/VCR is model HR XVC18

Also have a JVC 5 disc CD XL-F252
and a Samsung DVD 5 disc DVD C600

How did you cut my message and paste into a quote box? I accustomed to a different forum editor and rather proficient but this editor is different.

 Will pick up another.

Quote boxes: there is a "quotation marks" button on the tool bar that inserts quote boxes you can type/paste in.  Alternatively, the "source" button exposes the raw HTML which I sometimes use to get exactly the effect I''m looking for.

You forgot the model # of your cable box :).  Does it have a digital audio output?  You'd want to add either digital audio or analog audio from the cable box to the receiver, and also video from cable box to receiver.  (Component video if available, else S-video or composite)  If this is an HD cable box you need a third component cable.  Good, cheap cables are available at monoprice.com.

You have a lot of redundant components in your system.  Enough that if you try to use them all, connections & operation are going to get complicated.  You can connect the JVC CD changer to the "CD" input, but do you really need it when you already have the DVD changer?  Can you live with just connecting the DVD changer for DVDs, and not use the DVD side of the DVD/VCR?

If I were you, I'd get an HD-DVR box (TIvoHD or a rental from the cable company), and simplify down to just that and the DVD-changer, retiring the CD changer + VCR/DVD.

I'm still working to fine tune the settings on this Denon AVR 1709 and have not focused on the surround sound speaker settings.

Connections in the rear are for two front and center speakers and surround speakers. Surround back are set for Zone 2 which is the setting selected for Option Setup.

I've run the Auto surround mode setup with the remote antenna in several listening positions. The system "pinged" from all five speakers to the antenna and than ran its calculations. Upon storage, only the front two have played and I've left the settings alone while playing movies, tv, etc. Auto Surround is on. Prior to the Auto setup, all five had sound.

Not sure what else I may need to do or if I've left some settings incorrectly set. Help appreciated.

I think the "auto surround" setting on that receiver only saves the last surround mode used with a particular format, doesn't actually put it into surround mode.  Try the "std" button on the back of the remote to kick in std Dolby.

Switch to DVD, make sure DVD's setup menu has DD/DTS outputs set to "bitstream" rather than "PCM".
