Beatles Rock Band

They've put out the opening cinematic.  I haven't been a big fan of these games, but I'm a HUGE Beatles fan.  This opening cinematic is just.... incredible.

I will forgive them for having them cross the Abbey Road street too early and the timeline being a bit jumbled, as it all flows together so damn pretty.

This has been out for several weeks now, but yeah - it's freakin' brilliant. There's a better quality version on the official game site:

http://www.thebeatlesrockband.com/cinematic.php

I can't wait to see it in high-def on my big screen.

The game should be pretty good too...

Having never bought Rock Band, I might have to buy the full set to get the Guitars and all that.  To tempting to pass up :S

Picked it up today, played through the story mode (there's a trophy/achievement for finishing the story mode in 24 hours...that's just evil).  Excellent game, only thing is that I wish there were more songs or at least some DLC earlier than Oct. 20th.

That actually does not seem to bad. I wouldn't imagine there's any more than 3 hours of music on there. Might be tough if you are doing it on high difficulty though

I am really tempted to pick up the limited box but at the price that's it's going for right now...not very likely.  Saw plenty on the skid at the local Walmart today so I'm hoping that there will be plenty still at the end of the year at Boxing Day discounted prices....I'm just going to keep an eye on the store supply for now.

Enjoying it when i get to play, on Xboxlive as Kadath
post #9 of 51
The reason that achievement/trophy is evil is that I had something else I wanted to do last night and I had plans today after work, so I was almost forced to finish the game in one sitting.  Yeah, it was about 3-4 hours or so.

Armoury_R1, also on PS3.

I've played everything at least once now, guitar at hard, but have only done two of the venue challenges so far.  So six "photos" to go to unlock the final 'prize', whatever that might be.

A few thoughts on "Rock Band" by one of my friends. :)

****************

Okay, I played through the forty-five songs in the "The Beatles: Rock Band" initial offering last night. We did vocals and drums (not guitar or bass). I hadn't previously tried their controllers or engaged with that interface.

Games exist in their playing of them, of course. Looking at an interface, as distinct from working with it in real-time, are different experiences, and the former is not very informative of the latter.  (In case it is not obvious: The stuff in the back, the people and their background, are simply wallpaper or cartoons. They just do what they are going to do -- the player cannot affect them.)

These songs were familiar to me, of course. I thought it was interesting how the designers had to represent a musical code -- when to sing vocals (whether "lead" or "second voice") and drums -- without raising the impediment of actually teaching how to read a musical score.

The interface for the drums I found at least understandable. Since you don't need to think about pitch here, it is mostly a matter of hitting your mark. There are four drums up, plus a foot pedal. I stuck to the pedal and the left snare and did OK.

As to the singing, I tried leads and second voice. The interface indicates now-in-time with a vertical bar. You see what you have to do approaching as it comes in from right to left. Pitch is indicated relatively -- how high or low on that staff. (Key doesn't exist in the "Rock Band" interface, since it essentially is facilitating a form of karaoke, or, 'play along with...' .) So, timing matters, and duration -- how long or short you hold your note -- matters. What they are doing under the hood with pitch is not immediately evident. I suspect that they/the players cut a lot of slack there -- maybe things are different on the more difficult settings. I can't hardly sing Paul's parts at all, of course, and I can get by on Ringo's and some of John's. The scoring (on Easy and Medium) didn't seem to care if I was close on my notes (sometimes I dropped an octave, it accepted that, which I thought was good).

The interface for bass, drums and guitar are easy on the eyes, with the three vocal parts clearly displayed. The running song is "Here Comes the Sun."  Scoring is another matter, one I won't get in to at this time.

As I said, I didn't try the guitar or bass. I think that would hurt my feelings. ;)

As to the audio, it was pretty darn good. BTW, they have included some period (with the dates included) studio chatter I haven't heard before.

Eric Clapton and Billy Preston were conspicously absent. ;)

I've been playing this and really loving it.  I splurged on the deluxe set since I needed the instruments, and then bought the Harrison guitar too.  So far I've done the story mode on easy guitar and am now doing the challenges on easy bass.  I can see the songs getting a bit tired, so thankfully these Beatle instruments work with Rockband 2 since I can pick up that disc relatively cheap.

I'm up for online play on the PS3, feel free to add me :)

If you get Rock Band 2, borrow Rock Band 1 from a friend or rent it so you can put all the songs from that onto your HDD.  You have to download a $5 export key to do so, but at the same time you're getting like 45 or so songs that can be played in Rock Band 2, which means a total of around 120 songs.  Unfortunately, you can't export The Beatles songs, or play Rock Band songs in The Beatles.

Thanks for the tip Morgan!  I saw all those song packs available on the PS3 Network, and really want that "Who" pack so thought I'd get Rock Band 2 once I realized the instruments are all compatible.  Do you know if that key works for the other rock band track packs as well?

Songs come from a couple places.  Rock Band 1 Disc, Rock Band 2 Disc, Track Pack Discs, and DLC.  All DLC works in RB1 and RB2.  Track Pack Discs are rebundled DLC (you're better off downloading the songs than getting these since the songs can't be exported.  The export key only exports RB1 songs onto the HDD to be played in RB2.  However, the AC/DC Track Pack Disc songs can be exported onto the HDD to be played in RB2.

Thanks for the heads up on the track packs Morgan, I appreciate it. :)

Anyone else download the Abby Road pack for this?  I did. It's fun to play the side B medley, but over all I'm a little disappointed.  The idea is to play the album, but it just dumps the songs into the quick play menu.  So to play the album, you have to create a set list every time since you can't save them (as far as I can tell anyways).  So no challenges, no trophies, no nothing but the songs.  The songs themselves are of course class. The visuals continue to be eye catching.  I played the album twice, once on drums (tricky, but the drums are a real bugger for me) and on guitar which I'm more competent at.  Good fun it was, it'll be cool to try as a band.

I'll probably still buy the other albums when they come out since I'm a fiend for these games at the moment, it;s just a shame that it's not integrated into the game a bit better.  With Rock Band 2, the songs downloaded show up as challenges and come into the tour mode, as opposed to Beatles Rock Band and the play list dumping.

There is a way to filter the playlist by album (or difficulty, alphabetically by name, etc.).  I think you may be able to play the songs from Abbey Road all together that way.  I will get these songs soon but don't have them yet.

Yes, you can filter by album and just choose "Abbey Road" and it will let you play the whole album

I'll be getting TB:RB in a week or so and wondering about the DLC, specifically for the Wii.  How much memory do the downloaded songs take up?  As I'm sure the internal memory for the Wii will fill up quickly, I'll have to splurge for an SD card.  Will a 2 GB card do or do I need something bigger?
You can use up to 16 GB SD cards, and I'd recommend it.  You can launch games and DLC off of it for a lot of recent games.  The 2 GB might be a little small.  The DLC for the Wii isn't quite as good because you can't play the full 16 minute medley, but the songs are still there, I believe, but in smaller chunks (like 3 songs together instead of the whole dozen).
Thanks for the info, does anyone know how much memory- or "blocks"- is used up by the Abbey Road DLC?
No idea.  I just tried to look it up and couldn't find a good answer.  Most likely, you'll want to buy an SD card, especially if you plan on getting DLC or downloading games in the future.  I think the Wii can take up to 16 GB cards, so probably better off getting something around that size.
I downloaded the Sgt. Pepper DLC last night.  Pretty good stuff.  It's not full of the hardest songs you'll ever have to play (admittedly, I'm still on the medium setting of guitar and drums).  That fact is compensated by the cleverness in adapting an album that's not really from guitar heaven.  So you get to play the harp part from "She's Leaving Home" and the clarinet from "When I'm  64" since there's no actual guitar part.  The drums for "Within and Without You" seemed trickier then the mash up on the original disc, and they through in some additional percussion bits like bells on other tracks as fills to keep you busy on the pads.  I haven't tried the bass yet.

So the combination of cleverness and being able to "play" the greatest album of all time makes this a pretty good deal.

Looking forward to Revolver (my favorite Beatles album :)  ) in December.

Hate to break it to you, but Rubber Soul is the next full album DLC.

I read an interview with one of the Harmonix guys somewhere and they said it was basically a flip of the coin between Rubber Soul and Revolver, and Rubber Soul won.  It's speculated that Revolver will be released early next year, but there's also speculation that there may not be any further DLC after Rubber Soul if the current DLC doesn't sell that well.  But I'm thinking we'll see Revolver in January or February.

Ahh, I must of had them mixed up.  Revolver would be the more fun album to play I think, but I'll buy Rubber Soul regardless.  I'm surprised it's not Let It Be or one of the discs for the white album.  A bit more interesting guitar in those.  I like Rubber Soul, but it's a bit laid back.

Has there been talk that sales have been dissapointing. I hope not. There's still essential stuff that has not been released. Also PS3 owners have still not gotten "All You Need Is Love"

My further wish List:

It Won't Be Long
All My Loving
Roll Over Beethoven
I'm Happy Just To Dance With You
Any Time At All
You Can't Do That
I'm A Loser
I'll Follow The Sun
What You're Doing
Help!
You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
Another Girl
You're Going To Lose That Girl
Act Naturally
I`ve Just Seen a Face
Dizzy Miss Lizzy
All of Rubber Soul (as rumored)
All of Revolver (as rumored)
Strawberry Fields Forever
Glass Onion
Happiness is a Warm Gun
I’m so Tired
Yer Blues
Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey
Sexy Sadie
Long, Long, Long
Revolution 1
Savoy Truffle
Cry Baby Cry
Revolution 9 (Kidding)
Only a Northern Song
It’s All Too Much
Two of Us
Across the Universe
Let it Be
One After 909
For You Blue
Love Me Do
From Me to You
Thank You Girl
She Loves You
Slow Down
She’s a Woman
I’m Down
We Can Work it Out
Rain
The Ballad of John and Yoko
Free as a Bird
Real Love
If You’ve Got Trouble (Unreleased Until Anthology 2)
That Means A Lot (Unreleased Until Anthology 2)
Not Guilty (Unreleased Until Anthology 3)

So, as one could see, there is still plenty of material that would unfortunate if it does not see the light of day. And didn't the deal with Apple include all of the Beatles catalog? Considering that, it couldn't be prohibitively expensive to release DLC, right (with maybe the exceptions of cover tracks)?

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
While there is potential for the entire Beatles catalogue to be made available, this will be unlikely, according to John Drake of Harmonix.[64] Drake identified the costly development process as a potentially prohibitive factor: "Every time we do one song, it's not like Rock Band where we wait for the masters to come in and just author them... its like, send people to Abbey Road, use the original tape, separate them out... it costs thousands of dollars."[65] Drake asserted that Harmonix would take sales of the currently announced albums into consideration before continuing development of downloadable content.
There's also the unique dreamscapes which no doubt factor into the cost.

And it looks like "All You Need Is Love" will cease being exclusive to the 360 on December 10.

Thanks for the post.  It makes sense too.  If you think about it, the early pre-Rubber Soul albums all pretty much sound the same (Drums get a bit repititive as it is).  So while it would be fun to play them, they wouldn't be dramatically different to play.  It would make no sense to do "Yellow Submarine" since half of it is orchestra.

I would like to see Revolver, Magical Mystery and Let It Be though, and a compilation of the White Album would be icing on the cake.  Harmonix have proven to be really creative with adapting some songs you wouldn't think adaptable to Rock Band, it would be interesting to see what they could do with the rest of the later albums.
