****ing Counter Ad - Page 4

Well, I just finally got hit w/ one of those teeth whitening flash ads -- though not one of the nastier looking ones.  I also got hit w/ another somewhat suspicious looking flash ad for some weight loss drug -- not something more reputable on the matter like Weight Watchers or similar.  I don't imagine HTF would want either of those to keep showing here.  Since they both showed up at the same time for me (for the first time), I couldn't easily tell which one is which, but maybe that doesn't matter much, so here are the links I dug up from my IE6 cache:

content.yieldmanager.edgesuite.net/atoms/ad/e2/4b/0d/ade24b0dd5e04c0e8783957c6e50d947.swf

content.yieldmanager.edgesuite.net/atoms/16/06/f3/84/1606f38434e82b468ecd0846a36701b4.swf

Hope that helps...

I just got the "Winner" ad again - just when I thought it had gone away!

Don't look at the ads!

Why didn't I think of that?

I hate to say it, but I re-enabled my adblocker after having it turned off for most of the past year. I'm on a very slow broadband connection and the ads were killing me.

Well, we couldn't get away from a lot of those damn graphic ads even with blocking the URL. So we went back with relevant text ads.

Still getting the "Winner" ad.

Also getting this new one - the border flashes from red to green.

And the teeth are back at the top of the page! My, those things are hideous.

That "winner" add is killing me again and yes, Cees, I try not to look, but that flashing is so obtrusive.  Why are these adds back?  Just too hard to stop on a selective basis? Must resist the urge to click...

The past few weeks I've been content with the HTF changes. The critical problems were fixed and the site is readable, easy to navigate, and performing well. While I have desires for refinements, I have stopped complaining about design issues.

But the flashing ads and their ilk have continued for more than a week. So I've installed AdBlock Plus.

I have no problems with ad-supported sites; I read various online blogs and news sites that have ads. I use HTF sponsors like Blue Jeans, RAM, and Monoprice. (And I'd like to buy from SVS for a future upgrade.)

But the distracting, flashy ads are too much. They are distracting. I can't read when they're on the page. So I've had to install a blocker. This is a problem because it's a nuclear option that blocks all ads for all sites. That's not something I want to do as a good netizen.

Please let us know when it's safe to uninstall ad blocker software.

Is there any particular reason that you are using AdBlock and not Flashblock?

Just wondering

I searched for an adblocker and Ad Block Plus was the first I found. It seems to do the trick. And I don't know that the annoying ads are Flash specifically, just that they're ads. I don't want to block Flash per se: that would break YouTube.

The flashing ads have gone and been replaced by better targeted Google ads.

Thanks guys!

Aye, the (bad) image/flash ads are gone now.  I do notice though that I'm getting a bunch of pregnancy/maternity ads mixed in w/ the HT-related ones in the text-based google ads.  Since they are not intrusive (to me) or anything like that, I'm not complaining.  But just thought the powers-that-be might still want to know.

I sometimes use ForumBlock Plus, all you see are flashing ads... and set to music too!

The Wynn ads are gone, replaced by links, I didn't really mind them but you lot were getting far worse ads.

So I'd heard, but they were back today. I'm giving it a week.

If you use Flash Block, it puts a circle with a a "play" triangle where the flash object belongs. Then if you want to play the flash object, just click on it. If not, it is not downloaded.

As far as YouTube goes, you can right click on the flash object and one of the options is "Allow Flash From This Site". This way they will all work with out you having to click on each of them.

Well, I've got Ad Block at work but haven't gotten to it at home. So I'm a split personality on this. And I found with Ad Block that you can turn it on or off for specific sites.

I don't know what benefit Ad Block has over Flash Block (or vice versa)

I hope the flashy ads are gone for good; I have no interest in running ABP.

I have been only seeing text ads for the last few days.  We just hired a new in-house ad guy named Adam (no relation) so over the next few months graphic ads will make a comeback, but there will be no teeth, no winners or other seizure-causing ads.

Glad to hear Dave.  Thanks for the feedback.  While this thread isn't really the place to discuss them, there are a lot of refinements still on the way, some in the short term, others long term.  We are having a lot of discussions behind the scenes on the best way to communicate long term enhancements and feedback.  A lot of positive things have been happening behind the scenes with SPAM control (yea!), review and product page enhancements and hiring staff.  In addition to a dedicated ad guy we have been adding developers and a project manager.  Its going to take a little while for the new hires to get up to speed but we are working very hard to reward your patience.

Adam,
Thanks for the update. Good to hear that ads are getting specific attention. I don't know anything about online advertising, but it seems like everyone will benefit from more targeted ads. Right now I've got text ads for pregnancy kits and C-Section healing information! Nothing offensive, but certainly not relevant or anything I'd ever click.

Maybe the ad-insertion system is working with some random factor, that sorts itself out as people click lots of Blu Ray ads and ignore childbirth ads???

Odd.  I haven't ben paying too much attention to the text ads, but I seem to be getting targeted HT related ads: Samsung BD player, PS3, theater signs and Epson LCD projectors.  Its going to take a while for ads to get really dialed in, but at least you know that we, or I should say the other Adam is actively working on it. Maybe you added the DVD version of Junior to your movies list and they are keying off of that

That is one heck of an annoying flash ad, which pops out and obscures parts of the page whenever I accidentally roll my mouse/cursor over it,  which happens often  since I regularly use my browser's scroll bar.

The relevant urls from my browser cache are:

I agree.  This one needs to die a swift death.  The automatic video too.
Thankfully, I haven't seen that one.

I HAVE seen an ad for the slim PS3 quite a lot.  There is some animation in that which does slow my page loads down a bit...but nothing-at-all like the Amex "counter ad."  Hence, no complaints from me.
But I am reminded that I see this phenomenon quite often.  The spot at the bottom of HTF pages for a banner ad (just above the "Recent Discussions/Reviews/Wikis" lists) often comes up empty for me.

Don't know if this is unique to me, or the space is supposed to be empty, or whatever.  But I thought I'd mention it in case anyone is interested.

Thanks for the feedback.  We shouldn't have any pop-up ads so I'll see whats going on.  Thanks for the screenshot.  I'll dig into the white ad as well Mike.  I didn't realize that we had signed up snow as a new sponsor....

Maybe it's designed to promote the re-mix of the "white album"...

OK think we got the popup ad taken care of.  Let me know if you run into it again.......

I'm still seeing it, even after exiting IE8 and emptying the cache. FYI, it appears both in the banner at the top of the page and in the white space to the right of the page, as the first item at the top. This pretty much assures that the mouse cursor will hit it on the page.

I just got it again too.
