****ing Counter Ad - Page 5

I just managed to get rid of it using my internet protection software (Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security ver. 14). Under "internet privacy", it give you a list of recently accessed sites and lets you select from that list to add to a list of blocked sites. I added everything I didn't recognize and, for good measure, included the Montreal tourist site this thing ultimately sends you to, as well as ad company site that Man dug out of his cache. Now that online chatty Cathy is finally gone.

OK it and the serving site have been banned.  Please, please, please let me know if you still see it.  It may be a cookie issue.  Its odd that I never saw it today.  I wonder if they were targeting people in the NE US?

If so, they were very effective in at least one aspect: I have lost all desire ever to visit Montreal.

I have it right now.  Even when I refresh.

So did I until I took the steps outlined in post #120.

Once this thing has placed its cookies on your system, you either need to clear those or take affirmative steps to block the site at your end.

OK, I can do that at home but I don't have admin level access on my daytime boxes.  I might be able to clear the cache but I don't think I can block IPs.  Trust me, it's an issue even getting FF updated sometimes.  Will see what I can figure out, thanks Michael.

EDIT:  OK I'm back.  I used Firefox's 'Clear history' feature to nuke my entire history and restarted and both ads are still there, at top and side.

Forgive my ignorance of Firefox, but does "clear history" also delete cookies? In IE "history" and "cookies" are separate items.

In any case, the cookies theory was suggested by the two Adams (Gregorich and at Huddler). My own relief came from blocking a series of URLs identified by my own detective work, by Man-Fai's, and by checking the list of recently accessed sites in Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security program, which is what I run. After adding the whole kit 'n' kaboodle to the list of restricted sites under privacy control, the damn thing went away.

If you're not running security software that allows you that kind of control, you might want to look into it. It's getting to be a necessity.

Yes, 'clear history' consolidates all of that into a single button now.  It confused me the first time I used it.

As far as running security software I definitely have a suite of things I run at home, including No-Script (which we discussed a few weeks back) and (sad to say) ad blocking software.  I try to be judicious in blocking ads because I want to support sites like HTF but the more intrusive they get the more eager I am to just turn it on and leave it on for everything.

I don't have that luxury from many of the machines I encounter throughout my typical day.  The iPhone fortunately blocks most egregious ads simply by not supporting Flash.  But iPhone and HTF are not really good buddies right now, especially bad for posting.

The desktops that are assigned to me at many locations are locked down and you take what you can get....  The lab at the school where I teach at night for example does not let users modify ANYTHING.  And that's mostly a good idea ;)

It's showing on my machine at school too, and I do not think I had viewed HTF back when the Montreal ad wasn't banned....

Adam,

The "Montreal Insiders" ad is still showing up. Michael figured out a fix for his computer but this ad is so annoying that it is likely to chase visitors away.

Thanks for the updates.  Everytime I think we kill it, it pops up again.  Its got to be confined to NY area, because all of you see it and I haven't see it at all.  I'll go back to the ad networks again...
Sorry HTF, I have turned off ALL ads now at my home.  I didn't want to do that but now I have to.  I wish I could do so here during the day and at my school but I cannot, so now I'm stuck with Montreal for the foreseeable future when at those locations....

Sam-
I think we finally killed it for good. I was starting to think the as was either a cat, or immortal.  Can you let me know if it still appears on the non-ad blocked PCs?

Yeah, looks like that super obnoxious ad is gone (for me too).  Thanks, Adam (and whoever else worked on that issue).

I did get this little beauty in one of em tho...

I don't mind, but others might...  Let me know if you need me to dig up more info on it...

Hmmm...  I haven't seen that one (or any of its ilk ever in here ), but I do see some more prominent looking baby/prego ads showing up now (vs the occasional, less noticeable text-based ones).  Nothing particularly objectionable, but just kinda odd to see them (more visibly now) on HTF.

Ron and Parker thought we needed a pretty face to associate with HTF as who wants to look at any of us?  We couldn't afford her on our own so we had to split the cost with a lingerie store.  There reason there are two girls is because Ron and Parker couldn't agree on which to use....  I guess its too bad that this one wasn't a pop over as it could have had some interesting possibilities....

I'll make it go away
I known for a long time that Parker's got good taste in the ladies.  I guess Ron does, too.

And Adam's going to kill this ad?!?

I can't win...It takes me too long to kill some ads and there are others that I kill too soon....

Montreal is gone, hopefully for good. Thanks, Adam.

I'e gone something different now: I've uninstalled AdBlockPlus and installed FlashBlock. I don't mind advertising per se; and ADP wasn't doing anything about Flash Ads anyway. However, I fear auto-running Flash movies are battery vampires and suck the life out of my laptop. So I installed Flash Block to help improve battery life when away from the desk.

This isn't an HTF-targeted action. There are various sites that have mini-movies that I don't want to auto-play.

I wish there was a way to toggle Flash options based on power source. I don't mind the relevant Flash ads, like for the Sony PS3 -- I've been clicking it to get more info on the Slim. And I'm seeing ads on speakers that intrigue me.

But as a practical matter, as a laptop owner, multiple movies playing in the browser is not desireable when I'm not plugged in.

Am I alone in seeing that blank, white banner ad at the bottom of most pages?  It's fairly prevalent.

See below:

I see it too but I have all ads turned off now so...
It's there for me too. I don't block ads, and it's not a FlashBlock thing.
Thanks, fellas.  I was just surprised no one had chimed in with a "me, too" when I had originally posted about it.
Wow, I never noticed it. I usually don't go down that far on the page.

The "Blue Box" is your friend. I'll let our ad guys know.  Thanks,

Don't look now, but I just spotted the annoying Montreal tourism ad again (after the resource hog Elit ad got dispatched).  Doesn't seem to show up as easily/often as before so far, so will have to see...

Insane...  And sad.

Don't blame me, I was on vacation.  Last time we blocked the ad, then the provider, then the network....I'll let the ad folks know.
