Sony STR dh500 surround sound setup

Please help;

My system:

Sony STR DH500 receiver

Pioneer 5.1 Speakers

Scientific Atlanta 8300hd dvr

VIZIO VX37L HDTV

Samsung dvd-VR357

The system is up and running but I would like to fine tune the surround sound speakers. However, the users manual for my Sony STR DH500 receiver is as clear as mud when it comes to trying to navigate through the AMP menus. I am confused with all the different terms and settings. Can anyone try to simplify this for me?
 Thanks

The main things you want to set up are the speaker size/distance in the SYSTEM menu, and the relative channel levels in the LEVEL menu.  For system, set all your speakers to "small", sub to "yes", and the distances.  For the level, use the test tone, and preferrably a sound meter (Radio Shack analog) to get the tones even from the various speakers.

BTW I think in long run you'd be better off spending $50 more for the DH700 ($210 Amazon) instead of the DH500.  Has two quite useful additions:
- automatic calibration with included microphone (don't need to get sound meter anymore)
- handles audio over the HDMI connections, important for future expansion especially w/ Blu-ray.
