Does the average DVD Recorder record region free?

I have a Sony RDR-GX350 DVD Recorder.....now I noticed on the back of the machine that it lists region 1 for playback.  What I want to know is if that is also the case for recording as well or does it record region free?  The guide that came with it doesn't mention it.  I'd like to record some old home movies onto DVD so that it could be played in other regions.

No region code on stuff you record yourself.  Other side will have to have NTSC playback capability, but that's relatively common on overseas stuff.
