Picture Questions

I was trying to post a Wiki  blackout screen DIY and ran into issues with pictures. I looked in the FAQ, but I did not see the answers to these questions:
  1. Is there a size limit to a picture? Total post size limit for multiple pics? I could only upload 2 pics and then it would freeze up on the third.
  2. In my profile there are all the pictures that I uploaded. How can I delete any of them?
  3. Is there a preferred format for the pics?

Dave:

1. I don't believe there is a size limit as the software resizes all the images. I imagine the problem you had was with the work they have been doing on the server to get it up to speed.

2. Click on the images you want to remove and then click on the Image Info link that comes up with the picture. You will be taken to an image info page where you can delete the images.

3. No preference.

One other link that might be useful is for the Image and Video Tutorial: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/wiki/image-and-video-tutorial

Hi Dave,

Can you tell me which browser you're using and what the URL was (or the image file name)?

I just tested image deletion in Firefox 3.  The image you should receive is:

MESSAGE

Image big-cats-project-xl.jpg deleted

(although, of course, the file name should be your own rather than a National Geographic image of lions)

Ah ha, that's the issue!  The file name is top & bottom.jpg.  Unfortunately, looks like there's something funny going on with file names that include an ampersand.  It should be working okay for all images without ampersands in the name.  I filed a bug for squashing.  Sorry about that.  Thanks for the patience and I'll keep you posted on when we have a fix out for that!

I did delete another picture with out issue.

Next question, Why couldn't I upload more than 2 pictures in the Wiki post? A "How To" is not much use with out pics. I tried 3 times and reformated the pics to smaller size.

Yeah, that definitely shouldn't be happening.  I was able to upload and embed 7 images into a tutorial this morning using FF 3.0.11.  I'm currently installing 3.5 on a virtual machine and I'll do some testing there.

Can you tell what size images you were using and in what format?  Also, when the image uploading froze, what would happen?  Were you getting the "Please wait" barber poll?  An error message?  Nothing?

Thanks so much for your help.

I don't have the exact size but around 3Kb to 50Kb was the size. I tried png format and then jpg. It froze up with the "Please wait" barber poll. I started the post over 3 times and each time it would not let me upload the 3rd pic. I waited a while longer than I would expect the upload to take using the 2 pics that did work as a reference.

On my way home I thought of something else that may have effected the post. I am a terrible speller and many times forum spell-check can not figure out what word I am trying to write. So on longer posts I usually write in MSWord. Its spell-check is much better at deciphering my spelling. This Wiki post that I was trying was copied from Word and pasted into the HTF forum post box. Maybe this effected the picture upload?

Also, MSWord allows to add to it's dictionary and currently we can not with the forum spell-checker. I would like to add "HTF" and "wiki".

Could you tell me what the name of the file is (or PM me with it)?  Thanks, Dave!  I think we're getting closer to getting you back on track with that How To.  Sorry it's been such a bear.

Shure.... Eh... how do I attach a word file in a PM?

Also the reason I am typing above the quote, is I can not type below it. Once I am in the box, I could not get back out unless I typed on the "
Quote:" line.

I just had a brain storm. Could it have been the "Ampersand" "&" that caused the troubles in the picture upload? I believe that was the one that it hung up on.

Very very possible indeed.  That was what I was going to check actually in the file name.  If there are special characters in the file name (like such as exclamation points, ampersands, etc.), the image uploader might not be translating them properly.  Let's say the image you have saved on your computer is "hereismypicture&ilikeit.jpg" - that ampersand might be causing the kinks.  When you go to upload the image, try this...
  1. Click on the image uploader button (yellow square with the moon and mountain)
  2. Locate the image file on your computer (either the .png or .jpg)
  3. Once you have that selected, back on the image uploader, you'll see the field that says, "Save on Home Theater Forum as" - in this field, try entering a name with just basic letters and numbers.  Make sure the image name ends with either .png or .jpg in this field.
  4. Click ok and see if it works!

If it's still getting hung up, perhaps you could email me the Word file and I'll give it a try.

I just renamed the picture and omitted the "&". All worked out fine and I posted the DIY screen.
