WHV Press Release: Saturday Morning Cartoons Volume 2 - Page 3

I agree with majority of the post. The 1960s should have kept the Herculoids/Space Ghost and even dangler the Jonny Quest as part of the 1960s theme. They could also have thrown in the Hardy Boys from that era along with the first reincarnation of Batman.

I am also suprise the 1970s the did not have the Partridge Family 2200AD, Emergency +4, Captain Caveman and the teen angels. There are many other shows out there as well. My guess is warner and the other studios are testing demand for the cartoons.

I think Hardy Boys was done by Filmation and under who ever has the rights to the Hardy Boys franchise.

Emergency + 4 was done by another studio, and again there are probably ownership issues with whoever owns the rights to the Emergency series.

Please let there be a set three.

Personally, I love the H-B and WB “funny tunes” of the sixties and prior – and will enjoy their predominance on the Sixties set… but, as I said in a previous post, I would have liked to see more Herculoids.

Also wanted other hero/adventure series that were not previously represented – like Moby Dick and the Mighty Mightor.   Another Frankenstein Jr. and The Impossibles would have been welcome as well. Oddly, H-B and Filmation short adventure cartoons play better INDIVIDUALLY, rather than one-after-the-other – as would be the case in a Season or Series Set, anyway!

And this would have been the perfect opportunity to introduce the 1968 Filmation Batman to DVD – and there are still quite a few Filmation Supermans to be released.

What I want to keep to an absolute minimum is the double-dipping, and I am glad that Space Ghost and Jonny Quest are not included – and that the announcement of Filmation’s Aquaman was false, as much as I do enjoy them. Also glad there’s no Flintstones – and would like to lose The Jetsons in favor of something I’ve not already paid to own.

And I’m REALLY STOKED to get TWO MORE Quick Draw McGraw Shows! QDMG is one of the best cartoons not to have a set all its own!

I can easily see a Volume Three in our future, as they pushed these out so quickly, and we’ll have out “Pros and Cons” about those too..

SAY, has anyone mentioned ANY “Extra Features” for these volumes? If so, what are they?
I would have like to see the herculoids included again, because i was a huge herculoid fan. I can not go against some of the other comments about the 60s released.

As for the 1970s, it is well represented and like its selection. It spikes interest too see what they will release in volume #3 down the road.
I don't particularly care for these types of sets.  I guess some of these shows would probably never get released on their own otherwise, but it still isn't enough to get me to buy them.  I'd like to see Quikdraw and Herculoids get their own releases at least.  There are also quite a few Ruby-Spears shows I'd like to see get released as well.
it seems the network wants to see how the volumes sell and may release the individual sets. I would for one purchase the following:

1. New Adventures of Gilligan
2. Jabberjaw
3. Goober and the Ghost Chaser
4. The Funky Phantom
5. Herculoids
6. Speed Buggy
7. Valley of the Dinosaurs
8. Banana Splits

I am still going to purchase the volumes, because i grew up in 1970s with saturday morning cartoons. I have approximately 40 cartoon sets on dvd. There are a few I am looking for, but, I am patient to see how things developed. The recession has cut into consumer spending and also has delayed the network with issuing any new dvds other then there current commitment. Plus, there are quite a few releases out there that I want to complete first.

Is this the perfect situation for many of these shows? Absolutely not…

BUT, to use Quick Draw McGraw as a hopeful example, as there will be four shows across the two sixties volumes – and if BOTH sixties volumes sell well – even the least attentive studio executive might infer that there is a potential demand for Quick Draw as season or series sets… and they might even act on the music clearance issue affecting most of the earlier episodes.

As the economy worsens, and DVD sales decline, we must learn to expect and live with less – but we must also send the proper message whenever and however we can… and this is one way to do it.

Show them that we WANT this stuff – and MORE OF IT, packaged in BETTER WAYS, instead of lamenting over the imperfections in what IS released and increasing the risk that exactly what we want will never come.

F-TROOP was originally packaged by Warners as a “Best of” collection, which sold well enough to warrant complete season sets. Why can’t the same happen here?

Ruby-Spears SUPERMAN is being released by Warners in November. Hopefully, many of you will join me in picking that one up!

And maybe good sales on these volumes is what changes their minds!

Something like this can only serve two purposes:

1: An all-purpose dump for various properties not believed strong enough to merit sets.
2: A way to gauge potential sales on those properties, should sets be considered.

With four Quick Draws over two sets, any success by these sets is likely to point in that direction.

No guarantee that’ll happen, of course, but it couldn’t hurt!

These releases are a heck of a lot of fun, and I hope they continue.

I like the 1973 version of SuperFriends as well.  It is still my favorite of the series; maybe because it was the first "Justice League" type cartoon show that came out.  This version of the SuperFriends is available for download on iTunes and I have it on my iPod.  They even included the "next week" trailers for most of the episodes.

Thanks Ron!

The post and background information from Warner Bros. It sounds like WB was very happy with the previous sales and therefore are going forward with the new releases. Maybe the future releases with have the skatebirds, jabberjaw, the adams family, etc.

Exactly what is… “newly created enhanced content featuring Magilla Gorilla” and “newly created enhanced content featuring Shazzan”?

Does anyone know?

And, if it really is “newly created”, from what previous source could it possibly have been “enhanced”?  Do the two phrases even belong in the same sentence?

Why does each press release on these sets leave us with more questions?
sounds like one of their bonus features with the same talking heads
post #79 of 139

I hope volumes 3, will include Korg 20000 BC, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids, Those Were The Days, the animated Addams Family, etc.

And I'd still like to see Moby Dick, the HB Fantastic Four, and the Superman/Aquaman Power Hour or Superman/BatmanHour show up as well.

Can anyone tell me which HB show also had the Galaxy Trio paired up with it?

I bought the 70s Vol. 1 just for the episode of Tarzan. Hope we get a series set of that show. I remember liking Valley of the Dinosaurs as a kid, but not enough to get me to buy Vol. 2, as the other shows just dont thrill me. Many of them i didnt care for as a kid. As a kid i was really into the action/ superhero/ sci-fi cartoons, not a fan of the funny talking animal shows.
Does anybode here remember Hot Wheels and/or Skyhawks both of which ran on ABC from 1969 to 1971? If these two ever become available I'll buy em in a Heartbeat!
I noticed that the set includes 2 different eras of Tom & Jerry on TV. The 1960s disc has an installment of the original show Tom And Jerry from the 1965-72 CBS Saturday/Sunday morning run which featured repeats of cartoons from the MGM theatrical era. The 1970s disc, of course, includes the debut broadcast of The New Tom & Jerry/Grape Ape Show (show #TJGA-1) from Saturday, September 6, 1975 on ABC Funshine Saturday.

Something for everybody.

Guys! Do you think volume 2's will do well enough in sales for WB to consider releasing third volumes?

I'm going to go out on a limb to say yes. Both the 60's and 70's did fairly decent on amazon.com and since they were still getting the kinks out of this set--they may do better on the upcoming second editions.

I hope the producers do a fairly decent job on getting some extras put together

Hi James,

I agree with you. I am thinking we could see Jabberjaw, Captain Caveman, Scooby-doo Laff-lympics, Skatebirds, etc on future releases. I grew up with saturday morning cartoons and glad i have been able to purchase several dvd relesaes. I just hope more are coming down the pipeline.

That would depend on ALL OF US, wouldn't it?

I know I'll be there!

Besides, Warner is not releasing very many animated products in the near future... not counting "Complete Series" of things already released and repackagings of Scooby-Doo Where Are You and Looney Tunes Golden Collections into a new Spotlight Collection, so it will probably benefit from the unfortunate lack of competition.

i pre-order my copies of both 1970s and 1960s volume 2 for saturday morning cartoons. I am looking forward to re-living my childhood.
Has anyone received their copies of Saturday Mornings Cartoons Volume,2 for both 1960s and 1970s. I still think 1960s is very weak with their selections. The 1970s is ok, because it includes banana splits/New Adventures of Gilligan/Sealab. I am not sure why banana splits is included in the 1970s volume, because it was really from 1968-1969 and ran in re-runs in the 1970s. Overall, i think they could have picked a better selection. I still prefer the 1st volume over the second volume, especially the 1960s version, because it included the herculoids. I have been looking for the herculoids. I actually purchased Space Ghost/Dino Boy, because i like this cartoon. I welcome people thoughts and/or concerns.
I went through a couple of episodes tonight and the dvds are not as good as previous volume. I did like Banana Splits, but it makes you want more, because you have two scenes from Danger Island. i also like New Adventures of Gilligan's Island, which was very good show along with Sealab. You could also include the cartoon called Land of the dinosaurs, which is the cartoon version of the land of the lost. I was disappointed with some of the other selections, like peter potamus, hair bear bunch, etc. I would have prefer Jabberjaw or Partridge Family 2200, etc.
Looking forward to Gilligan the most. In case you are unaware Younger, there are 2 episodes of Partridge Family 2200 AD on the first season set of The Partridge Family.
