Also, I'd like to be able to mark a section read when I'm done, which I cannot currently do (just for a specific section) unless I first navigate higher up in the forums hierarchy -- IMHO, there really should be a "mark current (sub)forum read" function as I (and a few others) mentioned before.
That plus I guess I just don't create new threads often enough to regularly wanna jump into a section w/out any new posts there.

your proposal allows you to see if there were any new posts in a given section, either.
How DO you normally navigate the forum, Man?

Enquiring minds want to know....
Basically, I just go back to the top forums page whenever I'm done w/ a (sub)forum section, and then, mark all remaining unread posts as read from there. From there, I then look for some other (sub)forum of interest w/ new posts.
Since navigating higher up (like to the top forums page) is necessary in order to mark a specific (sub)forum as read *AND* also to see which other (sub)forum has new posts, the dropdown (as it exists now) is pretty useless to me most of the time.
*IF* there was a "mark current (sub)forum read" function, then that would give me one less reason to need to jump higher up (to the top forums page). And if the dropdown also indicated whether new posts exist for each section on top of me being able to mark current (sub)forum read, *THEN* the dropdown would become much more useful to me -- I would rarely need to go higher up in that case.
