The official "Features we would like to see implemented on the new platform'' List

Here it is!

This is your opportunity to list items that are currently missing from
the Huddler platform that you would like to see implemented.

To make this list easier for the Huddler Team to read and compile
please simply list the items.   Refrain from discussion.  Be polite.

If you already see the item listed, don't list it again.  Once it's posted
it's noted.  We would like to avoid 10 pages of repeated items.

Finally, we ask that all of you be aware that not everything you list
here will be implemented immediately or possibly at all.  There are
still tools that need to be put in place on the Moderator side of this
platform as well.

Thank you in advance for your input.

Date and time a thread was started, under the name of whoever started that thread.

Ability to preview a reply before submitting it.

I have one...

* When clicking into a thread, the browser should jump to the top so that the first
post can be read rather than jumping to the bottom thus prompting the user to
scroll up.

Hey Jonathan-
If you use the "Advanced Reply" (button in the bottom of page editor and linked in the header and footer of the page), that has a preview option.

Let us know if you have any problems with it.

Thanks

Hey Ron-
Thanks for getting this new thread going. As of now, it should take you to the top of the page. Can you give me a little more detail on what link (on what page) your clicking on that takes you to the bottom? I'll take a closer look.

Thanks a bunch

I really like the "personalized home page" to catch up on my posts. Could the "Forum Nav" and "All New Posts" be added to this page? This way we go directly to the forums.

After reading DaveF's post I would also like more smiles. I visit another forum that has many more - perhaps too many, but a few more here would be nice

I second that. Parker put that in last year, after I requested it. I'm glad that others like it, too.

Pin the right-hand side bar to the top of the visible frame, as done at Slashdot. I like the functionality, but the visual bounce and slide is very distracting.

Auto-convert emoticons to smiley graphics. e.g. :) ==>
Smileys are "text" to me and the new system is like having to bring up a GUI to enter an exclamation point (!). It's disruptive to communication; so much that I prefer to stay with text emoticons rather than bother with the smiley GUI. (And since I assume this will be added, I'm confident that all my typed smileys will appear as graphics in the near future :D

Is there going to be a user option to sticky a thread?
Or is there something else that does essentially the same function?

  • AN OPTION/ALTERNATE THEME TO REMOVE THE HUGE HUGE WHITESPACE OVER THERE -------->
  • Remove the "Edited at such-and-such date" in certain pre-ordained threads, such as the Track the Films You Watch 2009 and 2009 Films List threads, and all the "director" threads in the Polls area.  These pile up and are distracting, and even if you delete old "Edited" messages you still have one showing.
  • Signature editing/image tools (I've been told this will happen at some point)
  • If there's anyway to "remove the preexisting format" when you paste something into an editing box, that would be nice.  Basically a "paste as text" and/or "paste as matching destination format" like in Outlook.

Switching to Verdana dark-gray is already a huge improvement, and I could live with it the way it is now. That being said, I'd like to have the old color scheme back. This consisted of the following colors:
Timestamp bar: #e8e8e8 (currently #d2d5d6)
Left sidebar (and quote boxes): #d7d9e6 (currently #f7f6f4)
Post body: #f3f4f8 (currently #fdfcfa)
Text: #000000 (currently #181818)

Here's an example of how it could be done without altering the actual new design of the site, which I have no problems with:
Old Color Scheme Adapted to new HTF design.
It's still looking classy!

The going to the bottom of the page that Ron mentions happens on every page (at least for me) - if there were a page two in this thread and I clicked on it it would take me directly to the reply box at the bottom of the page.  It happens in every thread with every page.

I'd like to not have to trust Yahoo APIs or Google APIs just to make a post.  Relying on external APIs seems both lazy and dangerous.  And frankly I don't want to have to temporarily give carte blanche to those javascripts in my browser every time I log in to HTF.  While HTF/Huddler may be trustworthy I certainly do NOT trust other sites enough to give permanent access to those scripts.

I'd like to see the return of an option to exclude entire forums so they don't show when you click the "all new posts" button.

PM's: I'd like to see it as with the older software:

- When replying to a PM, auto-include the original PM quote text[s]
- Auto-move the "sent" PM into the "Sent" folder.  That's being done with the new software but it's also appending any replied PM to the original PM and leaving the combined PM in the Inbox.  That makes it appear that the reply'er is the one that originated the PM.
- Have the "Preview" function available in the "reply" field as was the case with the original software

Main software:

- Is there a way to put the old shortcut keys back?  ie, <alt>S to submit a post (also send a PM) , <alt>X to go to advanced edit mode,  <alt>P to preview a post or PM

Peter,

Somebody said this was a Safari bug.  Well, I am using Safari but just for the heck of it I
loaded up Firefox and sure enough, I go to the next page and it takes me to the very bottom
instead of the top.

I would like to see the return of the thread start timestamp on thread listings.

I'd also like to see a new posts page that updated continuously (like the old iSpy page) rather than having to refresh the page.

So I don't know what Yahoo or Google APIs are used, but isn't that smart development. Don't waste time re-inventing the wheel and all that?
Only if you want to be beholden to those APIs for time immemorial...  Only if you want to annoy users who have javascript turned off by default.  It also adds anohter round trip to external servers FOR EVERY ACTION ON THE FORUM.

There has been much talk about the empty white space on the right side. One solution would be to use a simple tiled background. This could be some classy looking theater curtain or something. On my weather website I typically use clouds. This way there is no empty space on the page. I also like to change it for about a week during holidays. Currently it is showing stars and stripes for Independence day. I feel that this makes the site look new and up to date for frequent return visitors.
It's not that the space is "white" that's annoying.  It's the fact that the posts don't take up the whole width of the screen.  Filling the space on the right with some kind of background doesn't solve that.

Also, maybe it's just me.  But when I take the mouse and use the verticle scroll bar to quickly scroll up and down a page, the scrolling isn't smooth at all.  It's very jerky.  The old site wasn't like that.  It was so much more snappy when doing things.
Personally, I liked the old vBulletin style and find the new layout quote annoying and unnecessary, however I understand Ron and Parker's intentions and don't blame them.

I haven't read the entire list (because I don't have that kind of time) but if they haven't already been noted, three things I would like to see changed:

1. Go back to the old member's HT list. This was a great way to list your HT gear and link to it in your sig. The new Wiki one is very poorly designed, a pain in the neck to work with (very limited spec editor which isn't worth messing with) and doesn't even show anything in my list when I add items. Looks like I'll FTP my list back to my ISP's server and link to it.

2. The Firefox HTF toolbar was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It no longer works with the new format.

3. We need a user-selectable WAP skin. The current one is useless on my smartphone because it loads images and all and it's too time consuming to wait for everything to load and scroll down a fraction of a millimeter at a time to find the forum links.

Edited: The HTF toolbar links suddenly are working for me now. Yippee!

I am definitely not a web design expert and I don't know if your scripts allow for this, but maybe you could add a Theme switcher. Here is an example: www.642weather.com/weather/template/index.php Look to the left center of the page. This allows the user to set the aspect ratio and color that he likes best. I believe that this uses CSS to make it happen. Mike provides these scripts for personal weather stations and all he asks for is a donation for his time.

Page numbers should return to individual threads on a forum's list of threads.  If the thread hasn't been posted to since my last visit, but I want to get to the last page, I have to click on it, be taken to the first post, and then hit the button for last thread.  It should say 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 . . . 73.
Agree with Greg and also would support the return of the TIMESTAMPS, which is a feature I loved on HTF compared to most forums which leave you no clue on the main page as to how old a thread is.

Please bring back the ability to lengthen the vertical size of the posting window the same as it was with old HTF.

Click the advanced reply button. It gives a much larger editing window for the post.

I seen some mention of Smilies on here. While I do agree with being able to type out the smiley  :) ==>  ... I would like to go a bit further then that. I really miss the side box of smilies that the old site had. I would love to see something like that back again.

Take for example the Track your movie/TV Eps. threads... on the old site instead of typing out :star: or :half: for the ratings... I could just move over to the side box and quickly click on a star 4 times to give something a 4 star rating. The way it is now... I would have to open (and wait to load) the smiley box 4 times to get the same rating. So needless to say... I stopped using that function for those threads now.

Make multi-quote "discoverable" from the interface.

There's no indication from the interface how it works; clicking the multi-quote buttons does nothing; the interface gives no feedback on how to make it work.

I still have no idea how it works, or if it works.
