Audio sync problems with digital cable. (Over-the-air antenna signal)

Hey, everyone. First post. Hope someone can give me some help with this. I just purchased a Sony DVD Home Theatre system (DAV-HDZ273), and I can only receive local HD channels over the air, through my antenna. I hooked up an optical digital audio cable to the back of the Sony receiver, and to the Panasonic HDTV I own. I do get sound, but it lags with the audio that comes out of the TV speakers themselves. If you turn both the audio from the TV, and from the home theatre system up, it echoes. The video and audio do not match up through the home theatre system. What can I do to solve this? Thanks a lot.

When you have a home theater system, you aren't supposed to use the TV speakers.  There should be an option to turn off the speakers on the TV (if not just turn volume all the way down).
If you have a newer Panasonic, go into the Viera link settings and make sure your default speakers are set to "theater" instead of TV.

Usually this is enough, but if the delay is so bad that you now have a lip-sync problem with people noticeably moving their lips and the words coming out later, there's not much you can do but return for a better HT system with less of a delay.

hey, thanks for the help. however, my viera link settings menu won't operate. it's all "greyed" out, and i can't select either the viera link control, or the speaker output. both of which WILL solve my problem. i have my PS3 connected to HDMI1, and the Sony home theatre to HDMI2. both of which should be recognized in this menu. i just read the manual to my Panasonic TV, and can't find a single thing on why the menu is not functional.

edit: now something tells me that it has to do with the brand of HDMI cable i'm using. man, i just can't win this battle. you have to have Panasonic or Sony nice-type cables for the HDAVI to recognize them. is that true? also, it has to do with having a Panasonic home theatre in order for those Viera settings to kick in. This Sony home theatre I purchased at Target probably won't be recognized then, right?

Really doubt it's your HDMI cable.  Please post the model # of your TV, maybe I can figure out which setting you are missing.

Cables generally don't matter, it's the hardware/firmware in the devices, whether they recognize the protocol the other one is speaking.  And it may not matter, for this particular issue.  In the meantime just use Panasonic remote, turn volume of TV speakers to 0, is there noticeable lip-sync problem?
