   Yes, its the RF modulator and it costs me $150 to get DD from a laserdisc player. But how can u watch Star Wars without good sound? You gotta do what u gotta do.
 
   I registered before April of 99 but a software change "erased" me that I had to sign-up again.

 I joined up around the time I got my Panasonic A110 DVD player. 8-bit video, not 10-bit. But I still thought DVD was great. I'd never really bought any VHS (or LD), but suddenly I bought a ton of DVDs. Now I wonder why I wasted all that money. I guess back then you couldn't actually rent DVDs anywhere! With the arrival of children, time for HT dropped considerably. But I still enjoy these forums and nowadays we mostly Netflix TV series.

Ha, besides the 1969ers I have you all beat by whole MONTHS of HTF addiction :)

Divx was interesting... then came double-sided discs and the argument about how the sides should be labelled. Bad Wives was the first multi-angle DVD, I think every DVD owner had that bit of porn as that was the only way to show off all the features of your new DVD player!  What else? Everyone had Austin Powers and The Fifth Element too. I think Austin Powers was my first DVD.

We were still educating people on the benefits of wide screen vs full frame (apparently that argument is still ongoing, we seem to be winning; at least most TVs nowadays are widescreen even in the USA).

The never-ending "when will Star Wars come out on DVD?" question. Now it's Lord of the Rings on Bluray. Who cares, if I do buy it, it will probably be on iTunes. AppleTV FTW and an iPhone (or iPod Touch) makes a great remote.

I most fondly remember the East Coast Meets at Scooter's.  They were awesome!  Getting to meet so many of the good people from the forum in person was the best.  I still remember holding the Terminator 2 - Judgement Day DVD in my hot little hands months before it became available to the public.

Googling my name used to bring up a photo of me in an incredibly loud Hawaiian shirt holding up that disc in Scooter's backyard.  (Sadly lost in one of the drive crashes.)  Those were the days!

Of course, my #1 HTF memory has to be the awesome proposal that the aforementioned Peter Staddon and his crew helped me put together on the 2004 Hollywood Meet.  I think those photos are still around here somewhere. . .

This is my second time visiting the site since its massive makeover. I must admit, it takes some getting used to.

As Walter said, one occasionally gets talked-out on a subject. For yours truly, the year 2008 drew me away from my administrative duties here (work, baby, work -- and at a newspaper during an intense political year ... well, you get the picture). (And, hot damn, but I do miss my 2001: A Space Odyssey signature.)

Ten years at HTF: You know, I at one time would have posted something about that. But having worked here with so many charter members back in my admin days kinda quieted me down on that score. I believe Michael Reuben mentioned at one time to me about having been a member here when there were only forty or fifty members. Imagine that.

I am certainly glad to see that the site still is coming along well. As I said, the new look certainly takes some getting used to. But more importantly, it is nice to see so many people I've known for so long posting in this (interesting) thread.

Jack Briggs! [cue Thus Spake Zarathustra] Good to see you're still around. When I was a 'shy' newbie here Jack was one of the first members (before he was given modlike powers) I was friendly with and we would chat by PM. The forum was a different place then, a little smaller, friendlier and the After Hours lounge was a loud, rowdy, profane place. Ron would regularly threaten to close it down. Aaah good times... [smiles whistfully]

Good to hear from you Jack, glad you're still around. I have to ask you this slightly OT question: How do you like the 2001 Blu-ray? You do have 2001 on Blu, don't you Jack?

Mike, I've seen Ernest Rister posting over at Blu-ray.com recently, just check the Disney threads!

Why thank you Heinz. I remember being a little too zany and irreverent here 8 years ago, to the point where one moderator (who couldn't stand me) sent me a PM warning that they were making plans to, quote "get rid of all forum comedians". I remember that message well because I started saying goodbye to everyone I knew here. But I somehow survived, and I haven't seen that mod here in years.

We used to be able to see a # posts/day (of membership) statistic on our home page that was kind of revealing.   I hope we get stuff like that back eventually under the new software.

Not that Greg will ever see this response since he never comes here anyway...

12 for me. I remember exactly how why I found and joined HTF. L.A. was one of the seven test cities for DVD so I had bought my player in May 1997 and was looking online for a community to get info on the new technology I had just dropped nearly a grand on (between player and discs). Keep in mind I had just graduated and was making a pittance so that grand felt like ten grand to me!

I also remember HTF celebrating its 1000th member. I don't go back to the alt.usenet days, HTF was already a web forum when I joined.

I got here via Tannehill's DVD Resource page too.  I was writing patent applications for Sony on various DVD related technology, primarily the audio side, and needed to see where the public state-of-the-art stood.

 Yeah Dennis, Jack's default avatar is kind of amusing.  I seem to recall from Jack's postings that he ventured into the world of high end audio (tube based IIRC) and was somewhat disenchanted with the process.  (Sorry Jack if I am misrepresenting your experience.)

Yes, Jack was into the likes of The Absolute Sound.  I remember he was trying to sell off his back issues, but I don't know if he did.
