Ok so every house I have lived in with hardwood floors - the floor by the front door takes a lot of abuse and you want to be careful about what to put on the wood to protect it. Short of pulling out wood and having a tile section................what kind of mat do folks use that does not scratch up or react with today's finishes?

I just got a dense synthetic fiber "oriental" type rug at Home Depot a few years ago for the inside of the door. It looks great and after a quick vacuum it looks as good as the day we brought it home. You could also look at a carpet remant store and find a piece you like and put an edge on it. Put a non-skid pad under it and that should protect the wood as well.
