Post Counts

Thread Starter
I know several of you, including myself, have noticed that your post count has gone down. When we lost a lot of the posts with our forum awhile back and we migrated to a newer version your post count didn't change even after those posts were lost.

The post count that is showing up now reflects the actual number of posts that you have on the forum from all the posts you have made. With our other software those counts were off.

We know this is bothersome to some but it is an accurate accounting of your posts where as the numbers on with vBulletin were off.

We apologize for the difference in the two software programs but rest assured that your count here is accurate.

That explains things.  I had forgotten about the post count vagaries on the last software upgrade.

Thanks, Parker.

I'm just trying to understand this. Are you saying that I suddenly gained more than 1,000 posts at the last change?

That would mean some others gained thousands of posts at the last changeover and now have gone back to where they should have been.

Sounds a bit like house prices in Florida!   ;)  . . . .  dammit

That's not how I understood the explanation.  Your post count was accurate before the previous software change . When that change happend a lot of posts were lost from the database, but not from the post count index.  So at that point your post count showed how many posts you used to have on the HTF, but not the number that remained in the actual database.  The number was too high, reflecting posts that had once existed but which had since been lost.

When we went to this software, a new post index was created from the actual database, so our post counts now reflect the number of posts of ours that people can actually access and read, not the total number of messages we have posted to every iteration of the HTF since it was founded.  This is the number we would have had on the last day with the old software, had the index and database been kept synchronized.  (Plus whatever we've added since the new software went live.)

Whoa, Parker lost over 25,000 posts.

You know, some forums don't give post counts directly but instead give a humorous title to the range in which one's post counts reside.  For example, the miata.net forum has the following ranges:  first through sixth gear, then "lost my brakes".

And with that post, Dennis Nicholls "loses his brakes" with 7,000 posts.

You should have seen the plans I had to celebrate my 40,000th post, now, it'll be postponed for a few years.

Wow, I can't believe I've been here for 9 years but still have less than 900 posts.

...or that just means you have a life.

Cute.  I'm just going to take my lumps, I only lost a few hundred, most of which were probably inane observations about the world.

I might be able to squeeze that into the festivities whenever it finally happens.
