Original AirPort/NetGear Routers no longer compatible?

After a quick search, I didn't find anything concrete about this online, but some troubleshooting and the recent experience of someone I know seems to indicate that Netgear wireless routers and the original AirPort cards are no longer compatible. This seems to have happened with a firmware update sometime in the last 14 months, because before that I did use these items together with no problem.

The NetGear router I have is an 824 and I'm pretty certain the other one that also didn't work was a different model. It works with the AirPort card in my new Mini, and with several b/g model AirPort Expresses I have, but NOT with the original AirPort card, though that card does work with my new AirPort Extreme. What happens is, it simply won't let you log into the network. It says an error occured and asks if you want to try again.

Just a heads-up.

I believe the original Airport card does not support the latest WPA2 encryption, only WPA.

I thought that might have been it, but the problem is I set up the network, it worked, then over several months without changing anything (other than  possibly a firmware update to the NetGear router) it stopped working.  Like I originally said, I didn't use wireless with the old AirPort for several months.  When I tried again, using all the original settings, it didn't work.  It's really not an issue for me anymore, since I have the AirPort Extreme now.  I was just curious and thought it might help to let people know.
