Classic TV purchases, selecting for success?

I'm relatively new to Classic TV purchases in that the majority have been bought in the past 12 months. Being bit by the bug, I have accumulated seasons from 50+ classic TV shows. My knowledge of the shows before purchasing have ranged from:
- seeing many if not all episodes through syndication in my youth,
- seeing many if not all episodes during prime time first runs as well as later syndication
- seeing a few episodes through syndication in my youth,
- seeing a few episodes during prime time first runs,
- never seeing before but going off high recommendations and reviews.

While many have been hits there have also been a few surprise duds. Taking into consideration my prior knowledge, genre, and year of the shows I began trying to understand how to better select keepers and limit the duds. What I've found for myself is:
- Westerns (14), Sci-fi (7), and spy/espionage (8) are almost aways safe bets regardless of prior knowledge or year produced.
- Dramas (11) come next but I tend to lean towards police or court room and seem to prefer ones primarily from the 50's and 60's.
- Comedies (10) are the most difficult to select and where I have had the most surprising duds. Biggest surprise hit: Barney Miller. Biggest surprise Duds: Mary Tyler Moore show and McHale's Navy.
- Shows that I obviously liked but only saw limited episodes of also have a high success rate.
- Successful show purchases by decade (origination date): 50's(21), 60's(25), 70's(6), 80's(0), 90's(3), 2000's(8).
- My prime time viewing primarily started with the 70's and up yet I only have a few from the 70's and none from the 80's.

I'm curious about how others approach their classic TV purchases and whether they have come to some conclusions about what works best for them and why.

Re: Classic TV purchases, selecting for success?

I usually purchase DVDs of television shows from the 1950s and 1960s. Having seen several of these shows when they aired first-run or in reruns, I know that the quality of most shows from those eras will be worth watching repeatedly, and I also know that the themes of most shows will not be offensive for my family and I to view. With very few exceptions (e.g., Monk, all Trek series, and a couple of other shows), my DVD purchasing is limited to those two decades. A few of the shows from the 1960s have seasons that spill over into 1971 or 1972.

Re: Classic TV purchases, selecting for success?

Brad,

I found that for me, it's also the same with sitcoms. Those to me are more risky buying DVD's. Most of mine have turned out well for me. I usually get sure-things with the sitcoms, ones that I know well, like:

Addams Family
Barney Miller (that one's also a favorite)
Bewitched
Dick Van Dyke Show
Donna Reed (blind buy, great show)
Father Knows Best
Get Smart
Green Acres
Happy Days (the early seasons)
Hogan's Heroes
I Dream of Jeannie
Love, American Style
The Munsters
My Favorite Martian
Police Squad (short-lived series, 6 eps. Highly recommended)
Taxi
Too Close for Comfort
Welcome Back Kotter
Who's the Boss

The only one for me that was a blind-buy was Donna Reed. I was familiar with the rest of the sitcoms before buying the DVD's. Most were seen in their original airings.

My prime-time viewing was from the late 50's thru the mid-90's with the main decades 60's-80's.

Like you, I feel more of a sure-thing when buying the 1-hr drama/action shows. I'm a little more cautious about Westerns but I don't have near the # of them as other shows in the catalog.

I'm a big fan of miniseries and here's where I've had great success. I bought a complete blind-buy "North & South" (all "books") and am in the process of viewing it now. Great miniseries. Several others were bought to add to the collection that were seen during their initial airings:

Band of Brothers
The Bunker
Centennial
Holocaust
Masada
Rich Man Poor Man (both "books) Region 2 PAL
Roots (blind-buy, somehow I missed this one back in the 70's)
Shogun (one of my all-time favorites)
Sinatra
V original miniseries
War & Rememberance
Winds of War

Dramas/Actions/Sci-Fi: By far comprise the majority of my collection. There are too many to list here but ironically, one of the few blind-buys for me was that 80's icon show "The A-Team". I lucked out on this one. I have enjoyed it so far. I knew about the show when my retired Dad and my nephew used to watch it in the mid-80's.

Another blind-buy is "Man in a Suitcase". That was recommend by Bob H and it's a great one. It's a british spy series and it's available in Region 2 & 4.

One of the few shows that didn't hold up for me from a kid was "Lost in Space". It was a little too campy for me during the re-visit viewing.

Bottom line for me is that I tend to be a "play-it-safe" TV/DVD buyer and rarely take a chance on a blind-buy set. I've found that in nearly every case the re-visiting/nostalgia effect really pays off for me with the shows that I watched during their original airings in the late 50's-mid-90's.

Re: Classic TV purchases, selecting for success?

Jeff,

Good Stuff, I want to reply more thoroughly but short on time, but I do have a couple of quick questions, comments, and a suggestion.

I was a fan of Rich Man Poor Man during its initial run, how well has that one held up?

We watched Winds of War and War & Remembrance through Netflix and enjoyed it but from what I recall they were expensive to buy.

I purchased North & South on a blind buy but have since sold it. The first part was really good (a bit soap opera'ish), the second part not as good but still worth watching. The third part we started to watch but then stopped after the first episode. I won't say why at this time but I will be interested in your take.

Have you seen the Horatio Hornblower series? Great mini-series that I just had to have, highly recommended.

Curious of "Man in a Suitcase", I've also been a big fan of the Avengers and have since picked up Danger Man, Secret Agent, the Saint (b/w), and Honey West. I'll have to look that one up.

This one held up great for me but that said. RMPM Bk 1 has been a favorite of mine since it aired.  Bk 2 also was enjoyable but it wasn't (imo) as good as Bk 1 when it initially aired.  The DVD set is still easily worth buying and watching again.  As for the transfer Q, unfortunately Bk 1 wasn't remastered or cleaned up and is somewhat rough in video Q but still easily watchable imo.  I was going to wait for a possible remastered R1 release but decided to get the R2 release (that's been out since '03).  Bk 2's transfer is better but it still looked to me like the original prints from broadcast in the late 70's.

I agree, they were pricy.  Both were excellent views for me.  It was regrettable that the MPI W&R wasn't remastered for the DVD release but the video Q was ok for me, easily better than several other of the 16mm unmastered TV/DVD releases in my collection.

That's interesting about your take on this miniseries.  Although I'm almost done with Bk 2, I've also read elsewhere where Bk 3 didn't hold up as well as the first 2 parts.  For me so far, I've enjoyed Bk 2 as much as Bk 1.  As said earlier, this one was a rare blind-buy since I had seen most of the miniseries from this era when they aired.

I haven't seen these.  I'll remember your tip and possibly check it out down the road.

You like the same shows as myself in this catagory so I think "..Suitcase" is a sure thing for you.  I can't remember the online store where I bought it but it was an Australian site that had the lowest price at the time.  Fellow HTF'er Bob H tipped me on that site.
