At the LA premiere of Public Enemies, Johnny Depp confirmed that he'll star in an upcoming big screen version of the cult 1960's show Dark Shadows, directed by Tim Burton.

I didn't see anything indicating what role Depp would play. Seems a little young for Barnabas Collins?

Malcolm,

For the past two years, I have read that Depp would play Barnabas. I don't know this for a fact; I'm just posting what I have read. I will try to get a link or two for you.

BTW, I like the idea of Anne Hathaway in the role of Victoria Winters. Somehow, this has the right 'feel' to it from my perspective.

I guess Ben Cross played a younger version in the short-lived TV revival, so maybe it'll work.

I don't think Depp is all that much younger now than Frid was in 1966. He seems more of a man-boy in comparision, but they are probably close in actual age.

I just wish this film would hurry up and get made so that I can finally enjoy the DVDs (dare I hope Bds?) of House/Night of Dark Shadows.

I can't wait for this film to get made.  I really thought they hit it out of the ballpark with Sweeney Todd, so I am very excited to see what they do with DS.

And I don't think Depp is too young to play Barnabas.  Frid looked older than he was.  And remember, Barnabas was a relatively young man when he was "turned," awaiting his bride-to-be, Josette, to come to America.  He wasn't supposed to be too old.

I feared he was going to be too young for Sweeney, but he turned out to be just perfect.

Again?

I'm beginning to feel like Burton simply can't direct anyone else anymore. Its becoming a reason for me to skip the box office these days and wait for it on cable or satellite.

Yeah and that Kurosawa guy could only direct Mifune.

Scorsese is doing the same with Leo DiCaprio, which gives me much the same feeling but others seem to enjoy it.

If you find someone you enjoy working with, why not do it as often as you can?

Scorsese cast De Niro in, what, 8 films? (Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, New York New York, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, GoodFellas, Cape Fear, Casino).

I don't think Tim Burton can direct at all. He just has the "tim burtion aesthetic" that he slaps on every project he does.

I beg to differ, and I submit Ed Wood as Exhibit A.

There are many directors that have a very stylized approach that they rarely step away from, if ever. Tati, Suzuki, Ozu, Godard, etc. One can not be particularly fond of their style/aesthetic, but I don't think that's all there is to their films. There's the performances they obtain from their actors, for one, which Burton has always done well (Reubens in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Keaton in Beetlejuice, Depp in Ed Wood to name a few examples); Burton also oversees wonderful audio experiences in his films. And thematically, most of Burton's films explore the notion of how an introvert can engage "normal" society, and the consequences that result, both positive and negatively (Pee-Wee, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Batman, Ichabod Crane, Willy Wonka, etc.).
