Looking For Some Decent In Ceiling Speakers. Suggestions Please

First off, I want to say hello I am a member of many other forums but joined this forum when I started to build my home theater. Up until now, I have not needed to post because of all the great info in previous threads. Thank you very much for your help and I hope I can return the favor latter on.

I am building a house currently and just recently installed this Channel Vision A-BUS system in my house. (4 Zones for now.) Channel Vision ABUS Whole House Audio Distribution System AB-902 - Smarthome

Simple question: The system will mainly be used for background music, but I would like to jam every once in a while. I am trying to stay around $150 per pair. They need to be in ceiling, I was planning on 6.5" but it doesn't really matter. Does anyone have an opinion on some good budget speakers for my use? Thanks!

p.s. I bought some ON-Q name brand speakers at Lowe's just to humor myself ($67 a pair) They are terrible!

I found a thread recommending the Dayton line from Parts-Express.com. What do you guys think of these?: Parts-Express.comayton CS620C 6-1/2" 2-Way Ceiling Speaker Pair | dayton ceiling speaker surround sound speaker CS620C home theater contractor series surround speaker whole house audio distributed audio home audio carbon fiber speaker special12300

I can't believe the price, and almost everyone gave it 5 stars for whole house audio.

I don't know you you found those from my recommendation but I have installed them in my old house and in my current house as well as a family member's old house. They need some new in-wall or in-ceiling and they will be Dayton. I just haven't figured out which models will properly fit.

"I was planning on 6.5" but it doesn't really matter."

I am an av installer/owner and have a lot of experience with what sounds "good". Sounds like you want a speaker that can be background music but also rock out to which means you need a speaker that can do BOTH. 6.5" speaker tend to sound very "Thin" so in main listening rooms like (Living rm, Kitchen, etc..) I would go with an 8" speaker.

Second, in the rooms where you will be listening to music the most you really don't want to chince out on the speakers. You really do get what you pay for when it comes to sound. Many inexpensive speaker manufacturers make their speakers out of cheap materials (I wont go into this) which can make your ears bleed. I recommend you go with a higher quality speaker for the main listening areas and do yourself a favor. Afterall, the speakers are producing the entertainment. Whether it's a great show or a sh*t show is up to you. I emplore you to at least buy good speakers for your favorite room/most used room (Often tends to be the Kitchen for whole-house audio). Or just run the wire to all the rooms now for speakers but put the speakers in as you can afford them. Too many times have I gone into houses where an electrician put in crappy speakers and the homeowners don't even use the system because they sound so bad.

Couple of speaker suggestions for whole-house audio speakers (Not Theater speakers! Theater speakers is a whole different ball game). Russound Acclaim 7 Series speakers will give you a better quality sound for a little more money (Bear in mind that Kevlar woofers and Titanium tweeters help reproduce sound the best.). You can also look at Boston Acoustics in-ceiling speakers for great sound. I mention these two brands because I use them both all the time and they sound great.

Lastly, whoever told you to buy an A-bus system was on crack! If you haven't bought it yet-DON'T! I'm not sure how many watts per channel Channel Vision gives you but typically A-bus systems are built on the same premise which is the speakers are powered by an amplified keypad which usually gives you around 7watts per channel. That's horrible and certainly could not be used for an outdoor application. These A-bus keypads give you distortion if you try to crank them up! If you cannot afford something like a Russound Cam6.6 or Russound Cav6.6 then you are better off with volume controls and an appropriate multichannel amp that can handle all the speakers you have. I have gone into several homes (called in by the customer to rip out a-bus systems because they sound like crap and they make your speaker distort.

I hope this helps you a little. I don't ever do forums but I saw your question and wanted to give you some advice. I probably wont check this forum again but if you have any questions you can email me JeffSaxonis@Middlesexav.com

Re: Looking For Some Decent In Ceiling Speakers. Suggestions Please

One more thing before I go.

You will not realize the sonic performance of a ceiling speaker until it is actually in your ceiling and playing. They have an open back baffle design which uses the acoustics in your ceiling to deliver sound by design. Insulation in your ceiling helps. If you bring a ceiling speaker home and put it on the floor and hook it up to a receiver they will usually sound crappy because they are not being used correctly so don't expect much through a test like that.
