Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

I am set to buy my first Macbook Pro in 2.5 years. I had pretty
much settled on the top-of-the-line 2.8GHZ model (although you
can custom to 3) with the better video card. Not sure if this is overkill
for someone not into gaming, but I figured the extra video memory
couldn't hurt with video and picture editing.

....then I saw that the 17" is going for $200 more and is loaded with
the same features as the 15" (2.8, better graphic card and memory).

Anyone have any thoughts of why it may be better going with the
17"? Is screen resolution any better?

I used to have a 17" PC years ago. It was heavy and a bitch to use
on an airplane. However, in these past few years the 17" models have
become lighter and I would imagine in Apple's case, more streamlined.

Just thought I would ask for any arguments for or against the 17"

PS: Was the 17" revamped, if only slightly, along with the 15" this year?

I know the 17" got a makeover within the past year but the 15"
boasts a 60% better screen color gamut. Is that the same thing
for the 17" or if it's not, does it make a difference?

The quality of the actual screen image is more important than
the extra real estate I will be obtaining.

Thanks!

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

Ron, yes all three macbook pros (the 13 is now a pro) were updated at WWDC. Make sure you are comparing the new 15 vs. the new 17, sounds like a $200 difference you might be comparing the new 15 and the old 17. The 17 has a killer feature that I desire, a photographers matte screen. You like glossy so thats no biggy for you. I'd have to think long and hard on the price premium between the two, I am happy with a 13 but if I was spending over 2k on a lappy I'd get the best I could and do it right for 4 year life. Of course, I wouldnt spend 2k+ in 2009 dollars on a laptop that cannot play back BluRays nor burn to bluray media, but thats just me.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

Simple thoughts:
  • 17" for complete desktop replacement, with little travel.
  • 17" for mobile business, driving to different offices (my dad uses a 17" PC like this)
  • 15" if using it when flying coach is a priority; my experience is it fits well in typical satchel and carry-on bags.
  • For price of 17", you can buy 15" + 20" LCD
  • It may depend on your eyesight and personal comfort viewing the particular LCD size
  • If travel is a high priority, seriously consider the Air. I've been attending meetings where one guy carries an Air. I can't imagine a better travel machine. Gorgeous and perfect size. I'd take that form factor over a 10" netbook any day.
After owning a 15" MBP for 2 years and dabbling with a beefy 17" laptop at work, I prefer 15". In this case less is more. But that's me. Your needs and tastes may vary

I asked about upgraded video cards at MacRumors forums. There's a contingent that argues additional video RAM has no benefit to photo and video editing. Counterpoint is Adobe has added GPU processing to Photoshop and video apps; and 10.6 is hoped to introduce more GPU processing. If you buy based on what is, you can go with a lesser card. If you buy based on what might be, you can buy a faster video card. (I haven't decided what to do for my wife's iMac in July.)

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

Don't own an MBP, but DaveF's points reflect my experience with 15" and 17" notebooks. Currently I have a 17", and I got over a 15" for because it was bigger. No other reason. But after 3 years of lugging it around I can't wait to get rid of it and move to something smaller. I have a powerful desktop computer so no longer am interested in a notebook as a complete desktop replacement.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

Eh...unless I had a bunch of ExpressCard add-ons, I wouldn't even think of a 17-inch. They just are too unwieldy. For someone that says he likes working on his laptop on airline flights, good luck opening up one of those suckers on a tray table outside of first class, Ron.

I completely agree with DaveF's comments. For regular travel, I like the 13" though.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

Thank you for your comments.

The only argument I have for the 17" is the fact that there is
increased resolution on the screen which is nice.

Also, unlike the older bulky 17" models, this is only one inch
wider and .7 inches deeper than the 15". It is one pound heavier.
My old Dell 17" notebook was 10 lbs. This Macbook Pro 17" is 6 lbs.

Also, the $200 difference is for the new 17" model. If you go to
the Apple website and compare prices all the new MBPs are on the
same page and Apple is quoting $200 more. Of course, I am ordering
from MACMALL as its over $100 cheaper.

Very tempting to upgrade to 17" when you are only talking about
1" and 1lb. at a difference of $200.

Just hope it fits under the airline seat like my 15" does.

Haven't made a decision yet.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

Ah I see, its the top specced 15 versus the 17 without adding their outrageous RAM costs or a bigger hard disk or thebump to3ghz.

I really do think 13 is plenty for most users and 15 is the sweet spot for power users, and 17 is best for photographers and video editors. The same group most likely to be pissed off that there is no BluRay drive available =)

Sam,

I am pissed no Blu-ray. What worries me more is that I buy
this new notebook and Apple introduces Blu-ray in another 6-9 months.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

Thats why I continue to 'invest' in used lappys until they finally relent, if ever. I will seriously drop over $2000 on the day they announce this single feature but not spend a dime on a new model until they do.

I have three macs now, and every one of them was purchased used, even the near top of the line Mac Pro... Soon to be four =) Mom will get my well worn but still ass kicking white macbook, and it will be more laptop than she needs and I'll be back to three.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

So, I took a trip to the Apple Store some 25 miles away to look at
both models side-by-side. The store was crowded at 10:15am. There
was a line outside for something inside the store, though I had no
idea what as I just walked in.

Looked at both. Picked up both. Played with both.

Next to the 15" the 17" is a monstrosity, though in actually, we
are only talking about an inch bigger all around. It just looks huge.

As for weight, there is only a 1 lb. difference between both. However,
picking each up individually, I could feel a noticeable difference with
the 17" though it wasn't overwhelmingly heavy.

Slightly easier to type on the 15" keyboard as the keys seem spaced
more like a desktop keyboard. On the 17" I noticed that the keys were
more spread out. Not a big deal. I think I was typing just as fast on
both.

Screen resolution was nicer on the 17". Everything looked smaller
which to some may be an inconvenience as it makes things harder
to read. However, if you want my opinion, I actually felt text looked
neater on the 17" and you could definitely see that you could readily
have more windows open without sacrificing real estate.

Finally, it seemed the 17" had better color and definition than
the 15" model though the difference wasn't overwhelming. The one
thing I was surprised about was that both screens were surrounded
with black bezel which I though was only inherent of the 17" model.

When it got right down to it, I was more impressed with the
17" Macbook Pro. However, I fly several times a year on business
and it scares me to use it in coach including trying to fit it beneath
the seat. Last time I flew on a plane the guy across from me had
a 17" Dell (I think) and he had to use it on his lap rather than the
fold-down tray.

The weight is not really an issue. What's one more pound?

I'll be making a final decision in a week.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

Were you looking at the Anti-glare 17 or the stock glossy?

The line was probably for iPhones, believe it or not... Or a personal meeting with his Steveness.

Which one did you go to, Freehold or Menlo Park? I like the MP store better but both are cool.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

The 17" has a much higher resolution that the 15". The 15" is 1440x900 -- when I first was shopping I was annoyed that Apple didn't offer 1680x1050 like every other 15" PC, but I've come to find that 1440x900 is good for 15".

The 17" is 1920x1200, which might be too high for me now. That's the normal resolution for a 24" monitor. If you find it readable, it will allow much more detailed text, far larger spreadsheets, etc.

Maybe you want this type dealie for a 17" laptop

The 17" laptops are impressive. It is less than an 1" deeper than the 15", which is the key dimension for using on a plane. Maybe it will fit fine on a plane? Do you really work while flying? I've determined that working while flying is not a good fit for me. So I no longer use the laptop in flight; books and video iPod keep me entertained

From recent reading, I may have been too harsh on SSD previously. People swear by the load-time performance boost. You're a speed demon, Ron, and you might find that's worth the premium.

You know what? I didn't even think about that. I am guessing
that the GLOSSY was on display. Usually is. I do know that on
the information tag on just the 17" model they were offering an
antiglare screen for (I think) $100 more.

I want GLOSSY, but I know where you stand on that.

Aaaah, I actually thought they were giving out liver transplants.

Freehold. Don't have to pay that Parkway toll to go all the way
up North.

Dave,

I want a SSD. Boot times are supposed to be quick.

Problem is, Apple wants $600 for a 250GB. They can go scratch.

Waiting for the aftermarket SSD drives to drop and then perhaps
I can perform surgery (or pay someone to do it) and replace the
drive.

The one thing I hear about the 17", and I don't know if it is true,
but if you are planning on replacing the drive with a SSD that model
will work more efficiently because it has (do I have this right?) 300 SATA?

Let me know if that makes sense. I don't want people thinking I
am making this shit up.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

There's been some hubbub about SATA speeds supported by the current MBPs and I don't understand it any better than you do. It sounds like it doesn't matter for current hard drives. But it might matter if you do a third-party upgrade to an SSD. I don't understand it and the info was sketchy when I read last week.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

from what iv'e read, the new books have had thier sata connection downgraded from 3.0gbs to 1.5. With any normal hard drive this wont be noticed because no hard drive can't saturate even 1.5 from what i've read. they say ssd's can go over the 1.5 speed but not even reach 3.0. I think most people on ars have just said its a bragging right to rattle off those numbers and in real world you shouldnt see much difference between 1.5 and 3.0.

Me from another thread -- I think that Apple is betting that Blu-ray is dead:

Blu-ray Won The Battle, Losing The War
A full year(?) after "winning" the format war Blu-ray still hasn't caught up to HD-DVD. Away from where we, the HT geeks congregate, BD has failed. Apple sees no reason to help a competitor that is on the ropes. Apple is betting that (HD) downloads will surpass BD soon enough, and we will be saying Blu who?

P.S. A lot of people have come back with arguments comparing BD adoption/time to DVD adoption/time. I say we live in a different world from 10 years ago -- successful products take off much faster. See iPhone/iPod Touch: zero to 41 million+++ in under two years.

I freely admit I don't know enough about the subject to intelligently argue about it. But I do suspect I'm right that Apple thinks downloads will niche/kill Blu-ray sooner rather than later.

Re: Whadda you guys think about 15" vs. 17" MBP?

i believe downloads are dead as soon as isp's get all the caps in place. Also, hard drives fail, authentication servers die, companys go belly up. I can still play vhs tapes i own and the very first dvd i bought 10 years ago. How easy is it to use a piece of software from 10 years ago?

Now im not against downloads. I have tons of mp3's. 90% ripped from my cds, the rest from itunes and amazon. But i am definately in the camp of liking to own physical media. I think downloads are great for rentals though.
