finding MY remote.. compatability databse?

Hi guys,

i would like to buy a universal remote control, as i have recently upgraded to a home theatre system (Bose Surround, Yamaha reciever, Panasonic LCD TV, DVD, CD, tape, karyoke, HD-DVR/cablebox, etc) and am using 5 different remotes right now

my question is this: how do i know which remote will work with all my components? i had a "universal" remote from my old system, which only worked with 3 of the components.. not really universal then is it?

is there any guide or list that explains which remotes work with which components? or am i missing something here? i can post all the model numbers if necessary.. thanks a lot!

Re: finding MY remote.. compatability databse?

Check out Harmony Remotes from Logitech. They are configured by connecting the remote to your computer via USB cable and using a software program that's pretty easy to use. You can download the software from Logitech before you buy to see if your hardware is supported.

And even if the hardware isn't already in their database, it usually can be added by using the learning functions in the universal remote.

The remotes come in various price points with different button configurations, but the software is the same for all of them.

Harmony has even added Bluetooth capability for the PS3 via an adapter. You can also sign up at the Harmony web site and see if your equipment is already in the database. I use the model 880 in both my living room and theater.

Re: finding MY remote.. compatability databse?

True universals like the Harmony are learning & will work with almost every IR controlled component. The only exceptions are some oddballs that use weird frequency ranges and/or protocols. They aren't like the cheap "multi-brand preprogrammed" remotes you get with most equipment, that claim to be universal but really aren't.

The only trouble you may have is with Bose surround if you are using one of their Lifestyle receiver modules (but maybe you aren't since you mentioned the Yamaha receiver). Some of those are RF controlled, not IR, which universal remotes can't deal with.
