I currently have an Adcom GTP-750 preamp and a Carver AV-705X forming the heart of my home theater. My main speakers are Thiel CS 3.5s. I have no problems with this system sonically, however I would like to have my preamp or receiver be current enough to support HDMI so everything can be switched from a single point. My wife and I sometimes do some serious music listening (our tastes run the gamut from early rock, jazz, classical, country, you name it) She is apprehensive that upgrading (downgrading?) to a modern receiver such an a Denon AVR-3808CI or an Onkyo TX-SR875 with all of the switching capabilities will not yield the sonic quality of my present separates. I know that sound quality is mainly subjective, but would appreciate any input you may have on this subject. AV preamps seem to be quite expensive with most running over $2000. Adcom will take mine in on a trade for their most current preamp but it will still cost over $1800.
