Now that I've been able to play around with the 3.0 firmware update on my iPhone 3G for a week, here is what I consider the pros and cons:
What I like:
•Spotlight search is great
•The variable speed scrubbing in iPod video is awesome...even its implementation. No more skipping ahead ten seconds because of a lack of fine control.
•Ability to "queue" multiple SMS messages even when offline. A little red exclamation mark appears next to the messages that weren't sent. When you come back online, just tap the exclamation mark to send them.
•Application launch definitely feels more snappy
•Copy and paste...it's great.
•Camera seems MUCH better. Looks like they increased the shutter speed, which means far better quality if your hand accidentally moves during the shot
•Find My iPhone...just an awesome implementation. The phone will actually ping (it sounds like a submarine) and vibrate even if you have it muted!
•No apparent negative hit to battery life.
•Ability to subscribe to published calendars
•Call log now shows which phone a user called from based on Address Book data...home, work, mobile, etc. Also, a little outbound call icon appears so you know which were calls you placed.
What I don't like:
•Still no unified Inbox in Mail
•Still no option to skip messages over a certain size. What I'd really like is the option to receive just the first few kilobytes of an e-mail message. Would really make things easier with a slow network connection and could prevent huge international roaming charges.
•Not a true Spotlight search. Can't search on text in an e-mail message...just to/from or subject. Can't search SMS messages.
•Still quite a few third party apps crash under 3.0. Hopefully forthcoming updates soon.
•Force quitting now sucks. You no longer just hold the Home button down for several seconds to force quit an app. First you have to hold down the screen lock button until the power off slider pops up, THEN you hold the Home button down for several seconds to finish the process
•Copying doesn't work on most web pages I've tried
•Fine tuned copying doesn't work in SMS messages that have already been sent. You have to copy the entire message instead of getting the option to select portions of text.
