gadget to remotely turn on/off my amp

ok, so this sounds a bit stupid, but my current amp has a 3-pronged plug, while the pre-amp has a 2-pronged receptacle, so I can't piggy back them and use pre-amp's remote to turn on both. Leaving the amp on 24/7 does not sound like that great of an option either. My monster surge protector (floor-based) does not have a remote and I would want to try to not upgrade to one of those shelf-based one that may potentially come with the remote. Is there anything else out there that I could use?

I recently purchased a set of three remote controlled wall plugs off of ebay for about $20. Each plug is labeled 1, 2, and 3 and the remote is labeled the same way. You just plug the remote plug into the way and any item you plug into that you will be able to control with the remote. So far it works great and was a really easy way to solve a lighting problem that I was dealing with.

Get a learning remote (i.e. Logitech Haromony type) that can control multiple devices...

I've left my 5-channel amp on 24/7 for years, going on 7+ years now.

I run a planetarium and a movie theater, and all the amps for both are always left on.

If you don't want to leave your amps on, you can rig a big relay to switch power to the amps, and trigger the relay through the switched AC outlet on your preamp. That outlet isn't meant for big current like an amp, so I wouldn't suggest going the 3-to-2 prong adapter route.

Does your amp have a mode selector switch or a standby switch and a trigger jack? You may be able to run it remotely from your receiver that way. For example, my Anthem amp can be toggled to trigger on mode which utilizes a 5-24v signal sent from my receiver via a cable with a 3.5mm mini plug. It can also be ran in auto on mode which turns the amp on whenever it senses an input signal via one of the 5 audio channels from my receiver. If it senses no signal for a certain amount of time, it automatically shuts itself off.
