My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Just received notification from Apple that my iPhone 3GS has
shipped. Even received a UPS tracking #

Now here's the kicker. I paid $16 for overnight delivery.

Not certain I will actually receive it tomorrow or not. Don't know
why Apple shipped this phone so early.

And besides, I'm out of town until late Thursday so it doesn't really
matter anyway.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Can't wait to hear about it. I love my iphone but suffer from very poor AT&T reception in my area. Wonder if the new phone is much of an improvement.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

That's cool, though. Makes me wish I had just had it shipped rather than doing the in- store thing.

Yeah, same here. Oh well. Hopefully they will have some civilized in store pick up method that separates those with reservations from the rest of the inevitable mob.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

I think they will. Will they activate the phone in store? I thought that's what they did when the 3Gs came out and I'm guessing that's the case here since they ask you to bring your SSN. This presents an added complication for me since we moved to a family talk plan a few years ago and I'm not the primary account holder.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Hahah I paid for overnight shipping too and I'm in Dallas until Thursday...

Edit: just checked email and no shipping notice.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

According to the UPS tracking number it is scheduled for delivery
tomorrow, Wednesday 6/17.

Too bad I won't be home until 6/18. Fortunately someone is there
to sign for it.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Seems to be a lot of seemingly "know-it-alls" on the other
Mac sites swearing that UPS is going to hold those phone deliveries
until Friday under instruction from Apple.

Not sure whether to believe that or not.

That's exactly what UPS has done in the past when new iPods were being released.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

I have an 11am appt. on Friday at my local Best Buy for my iPhone. I've been stockpiling BB gift cards and reward zone certs for a few months and the net cost for me should be around $50 (of $299). That's why I went with BB rather than ATT or Apple direct.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

will you e adding their $15 warranty plan.
I think it covers ANYTHING, including accidental breakage and water damage.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

As suspected, Apple has put the brakes on delivery until Friday.

Not sure. $15 a month is steep, when you factor in that for the first time I'll be paying for a data plan, so the net cost with that added will be nearly $50 a month more than I'm used to paying. I am ultra-careful about my electronics, all my iPods, Blackberry, etc. and not only have I not had any mishaps, they all look near-new even after multiple years of use. Of course now that I type this, I'm going to jinx myself.

It will be a game-time decision. If I get there and they push the plan, and really describe the benefits (i.e. that it covers basically everything including accidental drops, etc.) I might do it. I get 15% off of my plan rates due to my workplace's relationship with AT&T, so if that extends to the BB plan (which I highly doubt it will) that would ease the pain a bit and make me more likely to buy it.

But since it is a BB plan and not AT&T (hence no discount), they'll really have to do a good sell job and the plan coverage better be comprehensive and include all accidents and mishaps, not just "manufacturer defects".

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

I think it's $180 for a year...meaning if you got it for two years, you'd be paying 180% of the device's original cost. Talk about highway robbery...

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Michael - I think their thinking is that it's off of the unsubsidized price. Because if I were to break it in 2 years, I wouldn't be paying $299 for a new one. I'd be paying $699 for the 32GB version. So for two years at $180, it's just a bit over half of what the device would cost me to replace.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Red Alert!

Something just came across the AT&T wire news
about additional discount for iPhone upgraders when
buying through AT&T. Apple customers will get a
credit as well.

My friend who works for AT&T just showed me the
press release but I am on the road and cannot
cut and paste it.

I would advise someone to research this today
once the info goes viral.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

From Macrumors, I think this is what Ron is referring to:
Quote:
While today's big news has been the release of iPhone OS 3.0, AT&T today also announced that it is expanding the eligibility window for determining which customers are eligible for upgrade pricing on the iPhone 3G S. Customers who previously would not have become upgrade eligible until July, August or September of this year will instead qualify for AT&T's lowest upgrade pricing as of tomorrow, making them eligible to purchase the iPhone 3G S at the $199 (16 GB) or $299 (32 GB) price point at launch. Affected customers will save $200 on the purchase of a new iPhone 3G S as a result.
Quote:
Importantly, we want our customers to better understand our wireless device upgrade program. Like most U.S. carriers, we offer a variety of phones that we sell below our actual cost when customers agree to sign service agreements. In general, the more a customer spends with us, the quicker they become eligible for a price break on a new device. For example, iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.

We also currently offer early upgrade pricing only for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.

All of that said, we've been listening to our customers. And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we're extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time.

We're now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.

Newly-eligible customers who have already pre-ordered the iPhone 3G S at the higher prices will receive credits for the difference in price. Users can check their upgrade eligibility status by visiting AT&T's iPhone page, calling *NEW# (*639#) on their AT&T device, or visiting any AT&T store.

Yeah, I can understand that, but I know at least ten people that have broken their iPhones over the last year and never were they asked to pay more than the subsidized price...IF they were willing to renew the two year contract at the time of replacement. This even goes for a guy that cracked his screen less than a week after the 3G came out last summer.

In talking with our AT&T rep, it seems that people that spent the most on their monthly service (READ...max minutes, max SMS plan, the occasional international voice and data roaming plans) will be eligible first...the so-called July, August and September group. If you "cheaped out" (like anyone can call $75/month cheap) on just data and a minimum voice plan...you are going to be waiting longer for eligibility.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

I am out of town and had very little time to spend reading the
AT&T/APPLE discount bulletin which is why I was dependent on
you guys helping with the research.

I bought the iPhone 3G last year the day it came out.

Am I eligible for the new discount?

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Only if you spend $99 or more with the mega data plan per month. If you get the 'normal' plans then it's situation normal, mostly.

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Ron, on your phone dial *639# and press the Call button. You should get a text message back telling you when your eligibility date is. I think AT&T's systems are swamped though...I know only one person that has actually gotten an actual date back so far. The rest of the people that have tried have gotten messages that the information is currently unavailable. It may be better to try later tonight.

If there's something I've learned, it's that there is great inconsistency in the way consumer problems are handled. Elsewhere in the forum I'd posted that I am having difficulty with my MBP battery, and people posted that Apple had replaced theirs as faulty. Not so with me.

So while it's great that the people you know had their iPhones replaced at the subsidized price, I'm taking it with a great grain of salt and not assuming that it will be extended to me should I have a mishap with my iPhone.

That said, I'm probably not going to buy the Best Buy warranty and will instead encase the phone in a protective case and treat it like brittle glass .

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Well, I was sweating bullets for awhile there, but I finally got my shipping notice for my 3GS. Seems like there are two groups - the folks who had theirs shipped from China a few days ago, and people like me who had theirs overnighted from a US location (Memphis, in my case) today. I'm guessing Apple had a certain quantity pre-staged to the US.

I wonder what determined which shipping group you ended up in?? When you ordered (I got in about 4 PM CDT on announce day)?? Color (mine is black)?? Anybody else have an idea??

Ron, Sam - you guys really should contact Apple and see if you can get your overnight shipping fees refunded. The deal was delivery on the 19th for no extra charge. I paid no shipping myself, and I'll be enjoying my 3GS tomorrow along with everybody else!

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Sorry if that wasnt mentioned, I thought it was. Apple sent me a second notice saying they WERE refunding that fee!

Re: My iPhone 3GS has shipped!

Michael,

Been trying that call code and unfortunately, as you predicted,
the service has been continually busy so I can't figure out if I
am eligible for an upgrade. I would guess I am not since I have
just the basic data plan.

Craig,

Like Sam, I also received an email from Apple saying the $16 overnight
shipping fee would be refunded. Don't know why they even made it an
option and I wasted a lot of time calling multiple reps on the day of
ordering trying to get an answer on whether I should have used the
overnight option or not. In any event, glad to see it worked out.

Patiently waiting the arrival of my iPhone. Hopefully it comes this
morning. Have not checked to see where it shipped from but I do
believe it was a U.S. location (if that helps).
