*** Official THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 Review Thread

Denzel Washington and Tony Scott reunite once again as lead actor and director for a remake of "The Taking of Pelham 123" (I haven't seen the original). John Travolta joins in the fun as the antagonist, "Ryder", the primary leader of a small group who take over a NYC subway train (nicknamed "Pelham 123") and make demands for the safe return of the hostages onboard. Denzel plays Garber, who is a train jockey for the day (his own backstory provides some bits of fodder for the interplay between Garber and Ryder). James Gandolfini is onboard as the mayor of NYC.

I'm glad that Tony Scott toned down his penchant for lots of quick cuts and garnish color palette, instead, ramping up the action sequences when appropriate, and going with more of a stop motion jump approach at times to service the story.

The interplay between Garber and Ryder is entertaining, and Travolta relishes chewing up scenery when needed to make Ryder's point. The film itself might have flowed a bit better with 5-10 minutes cut from it because it sags a bit in the final act, but it's still rife with dramatic tension and urgency with Ryder's imposed time limit to get him the ranson, else hostages die.

I give it 2.75 stars, or a grade of B-.

I didn't have that much interest in The Taking Of Pelham 1-2-3 but I saw it this morning and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not a big fan of Tony Scott's stylistic choices but they didn't bother me much and they worked better here than in alot of his other movies. Both Denzel Washington and John Travolta (who I think is very hit and miss) are pretty good in their roles. It was nice to see an R rated action movie so characters are able talk like they probably would in the situtation. Overall, it was a fairly tense and solidly entertaining movie.

While I'm sure this will be considered blasphemy by fans of the original, I think the ending of this movie (while not free of problems) is much better than the original's ending.

As a big fan of the original film, I must say I was happy this remake met my expectations as an entertaining crime drama of today. I'm sure it's going to have it's detractors, especially from some fans of the original, but in some ways, I found this film even more entertaining than the original. Without a doubt, my fondness for this remake has a lot to do with the performances from Washington and Travolta, but that's very similar to my thoughts about the original film with Matthau and Shaw.

Anyhow, a lot of strong language and violence with an updated storyline, but a film I had a good time in watching and so did my other audience members. It doesn't have the charm/grit of the original nor a third strong performance similar to Martin Balsam's in the 1974 film, but it's far from a disaster, some of the original fans thought it would be when they heard a remake is being made.

After watching the original film again the other day, I hope this film does well enough for the studio to consider an anamorphic dvd release of the original film. Perhaps, even including it with the remake's release.
